Bought a G1S, should be here Friday, I want to upgrade the HDD and memory by changing out a stick of 1gb to 2gb for a total of 3gb and I can replace the other stick later if I want to go to 4gb.. Anyone know if I can use any brand of memory or should I use a specific kind? Also, would upgrading the 160gb 5200 hdd to a 7200 hdd be worth it?? I will be using this laptop for gaming etc.. Thanks

The HD should be fast enough, but if you want every second, a 7200rpm would work.

As for the RAM, just look for SoDimms that are PC5300 667mhz.

I did this upgrade and went with a 2gb stick of Crucial memory via their memory advisor wizard. No problems at all. At least with Crucial you can send it back if it is not compatible.

I have not changed the HDD to a 7200 yet but I would assume this is as easy as swapping it out and running the recovery DVD to reinstall Vista.

Not tried to do an HD swap on the G1s, but have done it twice on my Vaio and the recovery disk seemed to work ok. 7200 rpm drive made a big difference from a 4200 rpm :)

Would be interesting to know if anyone has had issues with the OEM Vista and hardware changes; in theory it can limit the number of re-installs, but not sure if a new HD counts as a change....
