The vendor I bought from doesn't offer a Vista upgrade package with laptop purchases, so I visited Asus' website and saw that they have a Vista offer.

What do I need to do to receive this? Do I register the machine with them? I've owned it 2 weeks+ now and don't want to let this opportunity slide..

Does anyone know if the Vista upgrade package is in the form of an upgrade DVD that requires a previously installed version of Windows XP or is it like the retail version of Vista? (where one can format and install)

I think "upgrade" kits for Microsoft are full installation kits that work as standalones, but whose licenses are only valid in combination with a license of the original product (from which the upgrade is bought).

At least that was the case with WinXP, afaik.

Yeah, the promo's website is worthless, Asus doesn't give us a "serialized" redemption form so you have to go to the unserialized process, in there you have to select the manufacturer from the list yet Asus isn't listed (I don't even recognize 90% of the companies on that list) so then you click "manufacturer not on the list" and it tells you to contact your OEM so, um... what is going on here?

That site seems to be a work in progress... I wouldn't worry about it until late December [when they said it would be ready].

    Well let me say this

You can get vista trial right now.

If your free copy of vista turns out to be upgrade only which i think it will,

You can format with the free trial and use the product key to verify it.

Im using the free trial right now. As far as I know I dont even care what microsoft sends me all I need is the key.

Aero is designed for computer with dedicated video memory of 128MB or greater. Anything less and you will have to drop down to turning Aero off (which is possible in all vista editions).

I wouldn't count on a fix. Aero requires a graphics card with at least 128MB RAM, and that doesn't sound like something you can fix with a software patch. It would be like saying the new X.x patch for Oblivion would magically make it run with max settings on your PII w/ 128MB of RAM a 16MB Graphics Card. If only programmers were always that efficient....

    You can live without aero.

Think of it as a lot like the nvidia window options but a few more fancy features.

Small windows pop up with a picture of the tabs contents. You know how in xp the folder information comes up ( 7 gb created 11-11 etc) well aero shows a mini picture of whats in the folder.
Browser tabs get a mini picture too

Ok I think this can make you browse through windows quicker if you have a lot open. But only if youre really in a split second race.

The windows switcher function ( you know alt tab) shows a 3d picture of all the windows open. This saves you a second or two to find the window.

    The windows become transparent....

Thats all. Its not really even heavy duty stuff even something old school like the 5 series should handle it.

Its not that important but its better than not having it. I do like it but if it slowed anything down or took a lot of battery life id turn it off and not miss it.

I took a test run of Vista yesterday when we tested it on one of our Office PCs.

I have to say its gorgeous...they ripped off OSX quite a bit to make Vista more Mac-like. Its funny, even 20 years later they still resort to ripping off Apple to make a decent UI.

I definitely want Vista on my new G1P when it comes out. I think you won't be able to order your Vista upgrade for sometime though.

Vista runs very well on the A8Js, now would have been using it except for two issues:

    1. sound not working
    2. IE crashes when I access my school's OWA 2003 site (curiously... IE crashing on a MS web site...).

Both things worked on build 5840, but now on RTM not working. And both are partly killers for me, so I have Vista on the 2nd partition using it on ocassion and using XP in the main partition as my main OS.

Hope I can fix both soon, as I love Vista, and was gladly surprised that it runs so well (even better than XP?).

I wouldn't try to play games on Vista...probably just do my development work and surfing.
