BTW. I must say it's the most beautiful laptop I have ever seen. Period.
P.S. I'm just uploading ZIP archive with about 50 pics. I will give you link ASAP.
-
I'm guessing that's the extended battery sticking out of the back?
-
Yes it is. I also got standard battery but decided to use extended one.
Here's pack with pictures : http://www.sendspace.com/file/hj8t1y -
Nice comparison.
More pictorz plz -
coriolis use that link which I gave, I dont want to upload ~50 pics on imageshack
-
That's one sweet laptop. BTW, nice pics!
-
I'm not feeling the leather and glossy lid. I think it would look sharper with brushed aluminum a la the w3.
-
I really don't agree with their decision of combining glossy black finish and black leather. The two materials don't complement each other.
The design seems not fully thought out like the S6 in my opinion. In addition, what's with the www.asus.com on the side? That seems out of place.
Regardless, it's a beautiful design, but not good choice of materials. -
Thats pretty.
You also have one sick camera dude. What kind is it? I want.
-
Is there something wrong with my eyes? This one is smaller than the W3???? What model is it? It has killer's look
.
-
what's the specification of this laptop?
-
More pictures here and a bit more info on the specs. Page was dated Jan 8th from CES:

Nice pix.. the lid is SOOO glossy. Good lightning in your photos. IT's seem like a nice 12" model.

"um, very nice... how much?"
Actually, I'm really not looking for an answer there, just been looking to use that line somewhere. Good job with those.
For anyone that doubts it, Asus certainly has the brushed anodized aluminum down.... but the U1's finish is sexy.... It wouldn't work on a larger model *cough* Z84, but on a tiny little system like this it's not too much. -
Looks sexy, but i wanna say: Finger print magnet!!! x_x
Yeah how much? $_$ -
PROPortable Company Representative
-
Asus should include a microfiber cloth with it...
-
I would be spending most of my time wiping finger prints off this baby than actually using it
The design looks strangely similar to the SONY SZ though -
PROPortable Company Representative
Asus actually includes a microfiber cloth in basically all of these systems anymore... it's for the lcd. I forget which model doesn't have one, but I know there's one in basically all but one system and that one could have even beena fluke.
-
Is it the white thingy that comes in between the lcd and the keyboard?
-
PROPortable Company Representative
NO! It's blue, and folded up... it's in with the manual. The thing you're thinking of just keeps things from scratching either other.... but it has to be for something else - I've just never figured it out.
-
Never got one with my V6J
Maybe you get the microfiber for the US market only x_x
any1 knows the specs for the U1? am too lazy to search -
It has a 1.06 ghz Core Duo ULV Processor.
11.1" WXGA screen 1366 x 768 resolution
GMA 950 graphics I assume
80 gig hard drives (I assume 1.8")
Less than 2 pounds weight (I think about 1.78?)
No built in optical drive
Webcam and fingerprint reader (not sure if there's a built in microphone)
Asus also has the S6 series which is also an 11.1" notebook but with a 1.5/1.66 ghz Core Duo LV processor, weights more, has 2.5" hard drive, has built in DVD burner optical drive and is heavier of course, no webcam or fingerprint reader in this one. The S6 gets mediocre battery life at best, I wonder how the U1 shall fare?
Also, I think the S6 uses a standard CCFL LCD screen whereas the U1 uses an LED screen with a very thin panel. I am drooling over both this and the S6. -
No ODD?
-
It's external.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Now I can't speak of the U1, but every other model Asus has put out without an internal ODD, they've always included one in the package (S8/S1/S5 in the US anyway).... I doubt this would be any different.
... anyone who likes this model and wants something this small can sacrifice.... plus, come on, how often do most people really use their optical drives anyway? -
This looks like the HP DV and LG notebooks. High gloss and black. I think I prefer the look on the brushed anodized aluminum W3 series. The gray on the brushed metal just looks better to me.
Btw, doesn't leather wear out heavily? Is leather a good material for the palm rest? -
PROPortable Company Representative
I agree wtih you.. but I'm a little sick of it.... Asus said a lot of models are coming in high gloss this year and I got sick over it.... They don't it some times, but certain things, like a tiny little 12" like this may look good this way.. but others wouldn't. The brushed alumnum is so classy, if for no other reason than because no one else does it.... MANY people including hp try to fake it.. and it looks hideous... Anyone can do a glossy plastic though.
-
I agree with previous posters that the combination of gloss and leather results in a bit too much "bling" for my tastes. Then there's:
1. only 80GB drive? That's simply not enough.
2. outboard DVD player? Can't travel with that puppy and watch movies.
3. WTF happened to the right-hand shift key?
Next! -
Note the harddrive is a 1.8" sized hard drive and the fact is, that it IS under 2 lbs, what do you expect?
I don't know about everyone, but I barely ever use my OD, as since its an ultra slim, it gets quite loud at times. I rather rip the movie to the HD or an external HD and run it off that. -
Granted the technology maybe great, but there are a lot of penalties for getting that weight down to 2.2 pounds (with six-cell batttery). -
PROPortable Company Representative
1. as cori said - 1.8" (not 2.5" - size and weight obviously), but 80gb/5400rpm is the largest 1.8" drive today and those JUST came out from Seagate.... A month ago the largest and fastest was the Hitachi 60gb/4200rpm (which is the same drive that's in the R2H UMPC.
2. your write off of the model because of the dvd issue is why more of these notebooks haven't been popular in the US market.... not yours alone, but that's the general comment from Americans. Basically, single spindle machines (anything that spins - basically that's a hard drive and/or optical drive... in this case the 1 is sans optical of course), you can't get a laptop to be as small as the U1 with an optical drive. Anyone who travels remotely frequently will tell you to rip your dvds.... it's one less thing to carry.. one less thing to lose... it's better on your battery life anyway.
3. you must be a lefty like me... I use the right shift key, but apparently it's more common for righties to use the left one?!? Anyway...certain keys are looked at as not as important. On certain size notebooks to try to fit every key would just make all of the keys smaller.....Asus has also done it where the main keys are regular size and the number keys and all those to the right were very small. Someone is bound to dislike either. The other way is to eliminate duplicates and shrink the space bar.... The one reason that works better for everyone is that you can get a full size layout (which simply refers to the size of the keys and the space between them), which makes a tiny system like the U1 easier to use... They say with a "full size" keyboard on a laptop, typing can be just as efficient on an 11" as it is on a 17"... -

I took pics in my living room, haven't expected that you will like it so much. The camera was Panasonic FZ30. And for the U1, like I said, it without the doubt, the most sexy machine I've ever seen. Really, it's state of art. Pics don't show it, you must touch, feel it. But IMO it's a little to small. I mean for me 12" with built-in DVD is minimum. I will try to do some test, battery life etc so there will be scores later.
cheers -
Have you tried TX series or new G series from Sony ?
If yes, then can you compare Asus vs those two ? -

That you for the great pictures! OMG Drool!
V2 - non glossy lid and no leather
VX2 - glossy lid with lambo emblem and leather palm rests.
I am currently leaning to the VX2 because it is so radically different than my V1JP in styling.
Also, I never use my ODD, I don't even plan on using it, that's why I want to use the Multi-bay for a modular bay battery.
I would love to see some more information and benchmarks on this, thanks mastha!
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
the notebook look oh so sweet
and it will be even sweeter if the 1.8 hdd got switched out for a 1.8 ssd
i can live with less capacity, and then there is always external drives when at home
i cant wait to see this in the wild and reviewed -
Actually, a 100 gb 1.8" hard drive already has been released or will be close to being released. I know the Vaio TX4s have been announced or already released in Japan and some have 100 gb 1.8" hard drives.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Yes, Seagate announced 80gb and 100gb... where as Hitachi was the only one that used to make them (all went towards ipods at one time), and they were only 4200rpm. Seagate's 80gb will be 5400rpm, while the 100gb will be 4200rpm.

Lets get perpendicular!

That is a very nice little machine you have there, Mastha! I'm jealous
