Just took this out of the box this afternoon and have completed the update to windows 8.1. The fans seem to be coming on quite often though while I am barely using the laptop. Only running firefox, 3 tabs, none are video. but they just wont shut up. The laptop is very cool to touch and according to the task manager my CPU usage is under 10%. is this normal? If it is i might have to return holy crap is it loud. The vents on the underside look blocked to me. I attached a picture, why are only the middle holes not obstructed by plastic? Do i have a defective unit? 20140226_202146 (2).jpg only those holes you see there are free and clear the rest look like those on the left. Thats all of them across the bottom no exceptions.

PS my model on the bottom says UX301L i thought the models were UX301LA, any other owners able to chime in on their labeling?

Edit: tilting or moving the pc while the fans are blwoing makes them emit a loud buzzing sound. Pretty sure I have a defective zenbook. What a bummer.

Edit 2: I am checking the temp levels using a hardware monitor and they are consttnly at 100F for both CPUs, reviews I have read seem to have these at 73F for light use, like web browsing, why is my computer running so hot? I can't see anything on in the background.

Hi, I just got a new UX301LA from amazon as well, and the fan is making a lot of noise from the first second. The noise can't be missed, it's loud and annoying and stops only when absolutely nothing is running.

Did you have any success solving your issue?

I think it is better to have it returned. You can use software tools to underclock the microprocessor. But if you find the temperature levels abnormal and noise high it is likely that there is a defect.

It could be something as simple as incorrectly installed CPU fan or too much thermal paste, resulting in insufficient cooling and forcing the fan to go fast to no avail. I think there is a warranty voiding sticker* on the CPU fan which makes it non-removable by user. So if your warranty is still valid, I advise you against opening and removing the thing.

*I am not a lawyer. It appears that there is a law in US prevent companies from voiding warranties based on stickers breaking. But I don't think it is worth getting into a fight/argument with Asus over this unless your warranty is void already.
