.... did you happen to hit the touchpad on/off switch on the right hand side of the system? I do that a lot to this day and I still yell at the system for a minute or two - so I can totally see someone who just got it thinking it's broken.

got the touchpad worked out, but now I can't seem to have this laptop on for more than 30 minutes without a blue screen of death.

Also I've been trying to install some applications to no avail...I got firefox installed but I've downloadd java and quicktime and both keep constantly coming back with corrupted installation file messages and I've downloaded them multiple times. Only time I have ever had a problem like that was bad ram on my desktop

could be, but more than likely just software....... that's super uncommon for an Asus system, especially with xp pro w/ sp2 and all new updates.... so i might even suggest just going back to stock for a moment - either through the "system restore" option or a format.... or you can give Asus a call.

As for the blue screen of death - are you able to see what the error is, or does it just restart too quickly? If it restarts too quickly, there is an option to keep the screen up (post if you need directions for how to do this), then you can get the error message so you can google it or post for help. Good luck.

    Yes I'll need directions.

Aside from the blue screen I get random software messages a lot; I've had so many I just kind of click through them but this fails blah blah error blah blah.

How painless is the "stock" restore? I've never used a restore disc before; I've re-partitioned desktops and re-installed everything numerous times but never a laptop

restore should go smoothly. All the drivers you need after the restore are provided in drivers and utility cd and online.

... Actually if you're going to go back that far to the point of putting all of the drivers back on, you could hit F9 on start up and go into the automated reformat utility....... it takes like a minute and it'll format out the hard drive, reinstall windows and reinstall the drivers automatically........ Doing that would earse any documents you have, so you would want to back those up first, but that's actually easier.

I'm trying to figure out the location of the ram compartment, I think it's on the top left with 2 screws... I unscrewed them and tried to lift the cover open but it feels stressed; like its connected to something inside and I don't want to force it...and I want ot make sure it's the right compartment.

You probably haven't removed all the screws for the cover. See the W3 guide here (pg 5) for screw locations.

The ram on the w3j is under the kb and one on the bottom panel. To remove the kb first remove screws on the back labeled with letter "k" then prop up the keyboard by pressing on the tabs above the f line of keys/
