With everything going at the airports at the moment, I know in the US you can take your laptop on board but from the UK you need to check it in, I thought it was a good idea to post what I have done, apart from being stolen I know this case if checked in, would keep my laptop from being broken, by luggage handlers playing bowles with your luggage.

Basically I purchased this case 3 years ago, it is actually an electronic tool case (from Dick Smith Electronics, a big electronics chain in NZ) I then fitted out the case with foam, the first fit was for my old laptop and I actually went to a rubber manufacturer in NZ (Para Rubber, they do pool stuff and foams) and the foam I used was a nice dark grey foam, it is actually pool filter foam.

Then two weeks ago, while I was back in the UK, I refitted the case to house my W3J, unfortunately I was in a hurry so couldn't get the same colour foam, but it will do for now.

Basically the sheets come in 2cm thick sheets and are easily cut with a craft knife, this thickness work in well with components.

    Layer 1
Houses my external HDD's and spare W3J main battery and Sennhieser earphones

    Layer 2
Houses 2nd optical battery and further encloses headphones (I actually need to cut a second hole for the optical HDD kit or DVD drive, I ran out of time).

    Layer 3
Is two sheets glued together to cover the earphones and support my W3J. I will do another cut out in the middle of the headphones, to keep my multi travel power adaptor, again ran out of time.

    The Lid
Basically houses all my power adaptors wires, chargers and bits and pieces.

I mainly use this case when I am flying/travelling long distance or going away for a long time, or I need all my stuff, but it is a great tidy way of keeping everything together and to keep everything from being damaged and it was quite cheap and you could do it for any laptop.

I've considered just putting it in the middle of the suitcase, allowing the clothes to pad it. :p

Any good hard sleeves with inside padding available for the W3J online? who knows what baggage goes through once it's gone through those ominous looking rubber strips on the conveyor belt at check-in...

Nice one Insane, yeah I was thinking of getting a smaller case and refitting, but with the thickness this one allows me to fit in all my extra stuff. and it does give a lot more protection than a soft case.

I use a soft case and sleve for everyday use, I really only use this one if I am travelling long distance and need all my gear, and it also doubles as a seat if need be :D

    Good tip!

I have a friend who purchased a similar case from Home Depot for about $20 USD. He carries around his old laptop and his networking supplies (router, cables, etc) in it and it works great.

thanks....... its quite entertaining going through security now days, with all the accessories and cables etc it looks prety nuts through the scanner. I think Sydney was the worst, they scanned it 4 times and that was just while we were stopping for transit :D
