First of all I would like to say hellosince this is my firs post here.
Sorry it is a question but I will certainly try to give some answers as well.
For the past couple of months I have been looking to buy a new laptop.
But my needs and criteria where not filled in by one of the existing models until the W2V from ASUS caught my eye :asus:.
I have allready ordered it but one thing remains a mystery. Some sites say it is made of an aluminium aloi, some distributers I called say it MIGHT be plastic. So can somebody here enlighten me on this issue. It really was an important feature of the notebook that is has a metal build (next to the absolutely amazing looks).
Thanks for reading/reacting and I hope somebody can help me out![]()
Cheers

Ok there was a post about this in the hardware forum (not this laptop, but laptop materials). You should search for that one. I'll see if I can find it for you.
If it is built like my W3V then it will have an alumnum lid and aluminum touchpad trim and carbon fiber/plastic covering the rest.
I'm sure one of the guys from proportable or geared2play can confirm this. -
Here is the link I referred to:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=19272&highlight=carbon+fiber+aluminum
dblank in that post says:
"A plastic is basically a substance made from hydrocarbons (chains of carbon and hydrogen) so carbon fiber isn't mixed with plastic. Carbon fiber is a plastic. That's what makes it so tough yet light weight as most plastics are. It just depends on the exact configuration of the molecules that alters its flexibility and strength."
So if that is true, the notebook is probably similar to the W3V. It has aluminum lid casing w/ some aluminum accents. The rest of it is carbon fiber or plastic. -

The W3 is not all aluminum and the z70v is not all carbon. The bottom of the unit is actually a plastic and even has a recycle triangle with a number which i belive means it is plastic. I have not seen one yett but i am pretty sure the w2v is mostly not aluminum. Most likely only the top side is aluminum and the bottom is plastic.

First of all....... ok, nobody knows #$%^ apparently. The Z70 is all carbon fiber in the "notebook sense" ........ CFEP (carbon fiber embedded plastic) is used throughout the Z70 (S5n/M5n(z33a)/M6(Z70)/W3v/Z63a/W1n) ... the list goes on...... That recycle triangle is there because the carbon fiber is embedded in grey ABS plastic..... I've cut through these chassis and even if it weren't for the fibers that you could pull of them........ they're about 1/3 of the thickness plastic could ever be alone and have probably 5 times the strentgh........
Now, the ONLY aluminumm used on ANY of these systems...... besides often the gpu cooler and fan assembly....... is the left and right click touchpad assembly and any visible brushed aluminum... on the W3v, it's just the back lid cover......... on the V6v, it's just the palmrest....... on the W1n, it's the lid and palmrest..... On the W2 is the same as the W1. Aluminum is NOT used for the undercarriage of the chassis because of exactly why it won't be used on the next powerbooks....... aluminum transfers heat and powerbooks are known to warp under high performnace.... they don't sit flat on a table........
That's a little lesson for you......... aside from that on the systems that I mentioned... the V6v's lid is actually magnesium...... and the old M3n has a magnesium lid and a fiberglass chassis..... fiberglass was quickly changed to carbon fiber on the next model that came out (which was the M6n about 6 months later) ....... basically it's the same exact technique and it results in the same weight....... but carbon fiber is a lot stronger...... So anyway..... that's that.
For the most part carbon fiber is used anywhere structure is needed........ brushed aluminum is used in high rub areas....... IE..... the lid which will eventually scratch just going in and out of a notebook bag........ and the palmrest which will get shiney over time as your palms rub on them...... So it's not used for structure, and not just for looks either... everything has it's place for a reason. -
Justin.... feeling.... dot-happy....today......?

Haha... that's just my continuous thought in progress. Not exactly seperate sentences, but not exactly a big run-on either, lol

Thats a negative on the bottom cover of the m6n and most probably z70v. Cut through that and tell me what you see there. That is a plastic bottom cover. Its not that thin by the way. Look up the triangle and number 2. Tell me what that is?
PS.. I think alot of people are confused by the wording. Carbon Alloy....As far as i know that means carbon fused with metal?
Build material W2V
