When the new batch of s96j's become available over at powernotebooks.com i play on buying one. I will mainly be using it for college stuff and playing mmorpg's, mostly everquest. All you Asus experts out there, what configuration would you recommend for me that would let me play everquest smoothly and without any type of problems, along with saving me the most money. Would the base configuration be adequate or are there areas that need DEFINITE upgrading before i purchase the s96j and make my gaming experience as smooth as possible ? Thanks

1.66 core duo (or 1.83, i have a 1.83 and it kicks ass)
1-2 gigs of ram (speed doesnt matter much 533vs667)
60 gig hd 5400 rpm (7200 for faster load times)

2GB memory (533 instead of 667 to save some $$)
100GB 5400 (better performance than smaller 5400 drives)

1.8, 1GB to 2GB, 7200RPM Hard Drive will get you optimal results.

Good luck in the search!! :)

I got 1 gig of ram, a 60 gig 7200 rpm HD, and the t2500 (2.0 ghz) processor. You may want to drop the processor to the t2400 (1.8 ghz) and up the ram to 2 gigs though. If you can afford the 2 ghz processor and 2 gigs of ram go for it, you laptop will fly.

I think you have to ask yourself what is most important...smooth gaming or lower cost - they're basically contradictory approaches.

Also take a look at what is easiest to upgrade down the road when you come across a little more money. RAM not only is easy to upgrade yourself, it's going to continue getting cheaper (shocker...I know). I'd say run with 1GB for a while. If you don't think it's speedy enough, upgrade in a few months or a year.

I would say a 1.83GHz processor will be perfectly fine for your gaming needs. Could you upgrade to the 2.0Ghz and will it improve performance? Sure, but the cost benefit is probably not there IMO (unless you don't have a budget).

Hehe, my config for the win :D

This config should be good enough to last a while, then upgrade to Merom and it will last a bit longer.
