Okay. Did your overclock reach the same thing before the mod? Mine crashes higher than (rivatuner reported clocks) 525/1458/527. Since the shader can reach so high, I guess the core should be able to take more if it was cooler no?
-
Nice mod! I did something similar, but I think I'm going to redo it with copper sooner.
-
i think its because of the fact you have a ddr2 version of the card. I got the ddr3 version.

Anyone have a disassemble guide for the c90s? My mind is tingling and I have an urge to make another modification. Maybe painting it or adding more lights.

Is there something I can do to remove those fans at the back of the C90 but still keep the laptop cool? I don't like the fact that it sticks out that much its hard to get in my bag...

I want that fan on my southbridge.
I still have my original fan for my old GF 6600 that I used for a school project (lol). I'm pretty sure it would fit there. It only has a 2 pin connector, will it work on a 3pin one? For the project, I put 2 sewing needles in the connector's holes and connected them to a 9V battery.
On a side note: I just put some thermal paste on my GPU & CPU (some crappy one that cmae with my 6600 aftermarket fan). Idle cpu temps went from 58 to 47 and they are 68 load (but the fans are running a bit quieter than before) but I might still have more testing to do with the idle temps. Idle GPU with folding@home went from 69 to 66 (well, it took like 15 minutes to cool it from 72 to 66 but lol).
I'll go check at Canadian Tire for copper sheets tomorrow.
EDIT: CPU actually went from 58 to 54. They stabilise at 47, but if I load my CPU, they only go back to 54. -

Great find Forerunner. and lets see a pic of that new paint job
-
Hey i was just settin up today to cut a hole in my ACE door to help cool the GPU and was about to buy the screen when I was thinking. Has anyone who did the mod had trouble with dust getting into the case? If so I was thinking about getting a sturdier wire mesh and overlaying it with some fine holed mesh to keep out dust.

Link to the paint job. Sorry camera is real ****ty, not a photo person. Its glossy black. Overall decent job.

I just tried putting some RAM headspreader I've found. They are 4mm thick and the only place I could put one is on the heatsinkless chip on the GPU. Just how thick is your "copper sandwich" klok99ah? Especially the CPU one.
-
im a fan of the new paint job. nice job

ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I wanted to paint mine all black too (including the touch pad) but a gloss black.
Did you take it apart to paint or just mask it? -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah mine is almost as glossy as the back of the c90, because of the crappy camera you can't tell. It has over a whole can's worth of gloss layers. I thought about doing all black, but then realized this would be a bit nicer, since I would leave the camera area, silver, and the power button and hotkeys are silver. Makes it look more natural as it also fits with the built on asus logo. -
Im in the process of doing the klok99ah mod, I made mine with alluminum plates and copper tubes, I didnt really choose alluminum over copper, I just couldnt find copper for the life of me so I used alluminum. I made it bigger like you suggested, but i made it to big, it wont fit under my ace door, so once the glue dries im going to cut it down, and I will let everyone know how it went.
I have done the Vicous mod also, so we will see if the heat sink plus holes in ace door help even more. My temps on idle of my gpu are about 65 now, but when I game can climb to 98, so hopefully this helps.
One more thing, I find that running in full overclock at 2.745ghz keeps everything cooler cause the fans are on a bit more, my cpu stays at 40-42 when surfing online and during the 3dmark cpu tests it maxes out at 72. My gpu after gaming for about an hour topped out at 85 while in Overclock mode so apparently asus just wanted us to overclock all the time.
Specs are in my sig, sorry I wrote so **** much.
Oh yeah, I cant get my gpu to overclock, Iv read every **** thing there is but still cant figure it out, I have the problem where in riva and ntune and basically every program iv tried the settings just reset when i hit ok or apply, I have tried tons of different drivers so im pretty sure its not that. I know of most the common problems such as not hitting apply then saving then ok and all those different little idiosyncrasies but none work for me. If this heat sink works out I would love to be able to OC my gpu. Any thoughts? -
So I got it all done, It now fits inside with the ace door on. Its a snug fit. My idle temps seem to be about the same as before, but remember I have the Vicious mod so there used to be an air space to pull out hot air and now there isnt. But it really seems to work well when Gaming. I played Crisis in 1600 x1050 on mostly medium with Effects and textures on high for about an hour and my temps never went over 76 gpu and 71 cpu. I also had my CPU OC to 2.75ghz so the fans helped out. I havent had it in long enough to know for sure but seems like it was def worth it.
Thanks Vicious and Klok99ah, without you id probably still have a melting nuclear reactor to game with. -
Hmm...I might have to do this eventually.

Hi I am timmy 112 I am new here I just have a few Questions.
1. Will doing any of these mods void my warrenty?
2. Is it possible to use two battries at the same time in the C90S, or if possible to create a mod which will allow this, so I have longer battery life?
3. Is it possible to use and/or make 2 led's that turn on when a certian temp is reached, eg. 1 led for when the CPU passes 80 degrees celcius and another led for when the GPU passes 75 degrees celcius? -
1. If the mod involves painting or any kind of major, irreversible physical modification, I would guess yes it voids the warranty.
2. Impossible, or difficult enough to not be worth trying.
3. Again, I think it's quite difficult as you would need to control the LEDs from software. Not impossible, you could use some kind of USB-connected microcontroller for that, but why? Wouldn't it be easier to just use a software solution, instead? -

If you want to try modding the access panel and still keep warranty. Pick up a spare access panel over at the Asus Estore. That way you can return it to unmolested state for warranty work.

A while ago (months back
) someone one mentioned the existence of new all copper heatsink's the the C90S. I didn't want to carry out the vicious mod and physically alter the outside of the case or get a laptop cooler so I decided on getting these new parts and trying them out as follows:
Recently I found a place that sold these new parts and went about the task of upgrading the heatsinks in the notebook. After a lot of work I found the CPU heatsink is not upgradable as it sits at a wrong angle but the GPU heatsink is. I had to modify the heatspreader part so it would fit by cutting it down to size by half. I dont have pictures of the part before I put it in but included 2 photos of result. Idle temps of GPU with e6600 at stock just browsing and itunes etc is 65 degrees which is about 7 less than I had before.
So it is possible to reduce the temperatures with the new parts asus supplies but only for the GPU. Do not waste money on the CPU heatsink!Attached Files:

Can we get some pictures of the CPU heat sink compared to the normal one?
-
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
I am afraid not I wrecked it in my efforts to make it fit. It is exactly the same as the aluminium except that unlike the aluminium it doesn't leave space for the heatpipe for the southbridge. Also for some reason it won't sit level in the C90S leaving at least 3mm between it and the top of the CPU when it comes to screwing it down. This is what made me give up on it. I may be able to find it in my bin haha. But if I do I warn you I did shorten the whole heatpreader by a third so I could fit it in!

OK found it - shortened copper CPU heatsink

To klok99ah , Zac90s, and those who have made the klok99ah mod.
Please, could you give us the thickness of copper sheet you used ? And what diameter for the copper tubes ?
Thanks in advance.

King of Interns where you took copper heatsink's on GPU? And on CPU ordered from a site asusparts.eu for c90p?
sorry for my bad english -
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Welcome to NBR Judge Dredd! I am not exactly sure what you are after? If you want to buy the the two components listed above in my earlier post just follow the link. It will take you straight to the list of parts asusparts.eu sell for the C90P. The 2 parts are in that list. The company is based in Sweden so they order the parts from asus in taiwan and then send them to you from sweden when the parts arrive. Does take several weeks. Hope this answers your question.
If you are asking how I had them modified to fit the C90S I didn't cut them down to size myself, don't have the tools or the knowledge. Instead I took them to a nearby industrial estate where I found a metal cutting business. They cut the items down to size for me free of charge. This of course probably won't be an option for you so you will need to buy certain tools such as a dremel to carry out this mod. -
King of Interns, many thanks for the answer, yes this that that I wished to learn 1 answer. For 2 answer too thanks, I so have understood that GPU heatsink completely approaches. As to CPU heatsink I and have not understood in what there a problem?! There is a backlash between CPU and top of heatsink-3mm? And how it to correct? Whether there are still problems with CPU heatsink with hardware or fit of notebook? If it is written in previous posts tell to me. It is heavy to translate some phrases and the translator not so good
)

King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Hmm it is hard to explain. Essentially the CPU heatsink is not exactly identical. With the one I bought after putting it into the laptop the heatspreader with copper heatpipe connected to it (part that is supposed to sit on top of CPU) didn't. I would say about 2-3 mm gap between it and the CPU meaning I couldn't screw it down. I also had to cut it down as you can see above meaning less cooling so I decided it is not worth it. Even if I did bend it with force to fit and it doesn't break it probably wouldn't do a better job than the un-modified larger aluminium heatsink.
I understand your difficulties in understanding english so I try to make it as simple to understand as poss -
So, how I have understood CPU heatsink from c90p there is no sense to buy?
thanks for the answer.

King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Yep! In my opinion.
-
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Not sure if this if a question already answered and I apologise if it already is but what exactly should I be looking for to cover up custom vents ie the vicious mod. Is it a type of mesh and can it be found in hardware stores or somewhere specific?
-
I have also a question:
What shall i do, when i have to sent my customized C90S to Asus Support? Does anyone done this before? -
Hi,
I am about to get a new ace door as I don't want to modify the original one.
I will drill holes to have better air flow for cooling the GPU.
But is it useful to drill holes for cooling the HDD ?
Thanks in advance for your advices.
@+ -
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Lol yeah I considered doing that too. You could do it and it won't do any harm. Just make sure to glue some fine mesh on the inside of the drilled areas to keep dust and debris out. I have loads left over from my modding so I could send you some if you don't have any or have difficulty finding it. It is also a dark grey colour so it won't stand out.
I drilled the entire raised area myself and it worked a treat. But I am sure you could drill almost the entire ace door. Stick a decent cooler underneath and you will be very cool -
Thanks alot.
Just have a look here and see t°C after a 3dmark06 test :

Hey Quick question for anyone that can answer it, how have people been overclocking their 8600GT 512 ddr2 cards. Do you use something like riva tuner or nvidia control panel or can you not use a software based overclocking tool. Out of money for the moment so I just want to get my games running a little better untill I get the 9600.
Thanks -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
RivaTuner should work.
I think I used coolbits when I had mine but thats a bit outdated now. -
Awsome, anything will be better then a 3127 3DMARk score until I get a better GPU. And with your mod my 8600 is running very cool so overclock it is.
-
Hey I wanted to show you guys this.
I have an 8600GT M DDR2 OC at 575/1150/425
I have done the vicious mod, have mightylobos all copper heatsink installed and have a zalman zm-nc2000 laptop cooler.
Temps with these were 65C at idle and 82C under load playing games.
I purchased these VGA heatsinks off of ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250395770859
I then placed them on the copper heatsink trying to get better cooling.
After adding these heatsinks I now have 57C at Idle and 74C under load playing games.
For 6 dollars I think these results are awsome, here are some picsAttached Files:

Nice mod. Shame you have to cut the area completely out of the case though. There is another way you can reduce temps a little and that is to stick the old alumium GPU cover from the C90S onto the top of the copper heatpipe on the new heatsink with some thermal paste. It will fit perfectly and the case will hold it in place nicely. Temps dropped 3-4C for me when I did a while back
-
@ C90S Rookie,
You could add one vga copper heatsink on the grey chip.
This chip is not covered by your copper plate because it is higher than the GPU, is it ?
@ King,
I think there's no heatspreader as he modded the heatsink.
I think there's only a copper plate.
