Curious to know the OS statistics of C90 users.
I guess g1 and g2 users could be included as well.

What OS do you use with your C90

I'll be combining XP home and Pro together as XP.

Vista x86 most of the time now, I used x64 before but didnt see any benifits to the x64 build at all. My benchmarks showed most games ran better on vista x86, and some games didnt run at all on x64.

The only benifits for x64 that really pull me in is the ability to use more than 3gb of ram, and being able to run x64 software. However the C90 cant use more than 3gb of ram because of the chipset so that benifit is gone. Then my test of the x64 software vs the x86 software showed that even in x64 mode it wasnt really faster than x86.

I still have XP there for the rare program/game that wont run in vista. All 3 of them are on my machine tho I have a tripple boot.

Viscious, I'm sure you checked this, but why does the intel data sheet say the 945G chipset is maxxed at 4gig? I understand why Asus used it for the 1066fsb support which the G1S chipset doesn't support:

The white sheets say for 4gb of ram adressablity. To most people that equates to 4gb of ram but, thats not how it works. To make a very complicated matter simple. To use 4gb of ram in windows you need 8gb of ram adressablity or more, because the system reserves so much of the ram address space for itself. The gpu, the cpu, the mobo, sound card ect ect hold so much adress space. The exact amount it holds is close to .75gb thus why you will see like 3.2gb of ram in windows usually with 4gb in the machine.

The work around to this is having higher adress space, you can remap the memory for the system to a point higher than 4gb and then windows can see and use all 4gb of the ram present. It can cause some issues with compatability because its not something your everyday person and computer user would do. Its more of a server only thing right now but in the near future it will catch on more.

As for the c90, it wont even boot with 4gb of ram in it (or post I should say) so even tho you can in theory use about 3.2gb of ram, for what ever reason, on purpose or accident the c90 wont work with 4gb of ram, so your forced to 3gb. Plus 3gb is a very very hard thing to get working as is. 3 different types of ram I used and not one of them worked with 3gb. I had to settle for 2gb of ram.

Is is possible with bios change to boot with 4 gigs, use above 3 gigs for system resources, and have 3 gigs free for everything else? Who was that NBR member I saw on here that in his sig for c90 it said 4 gigs ram, sees 3 gigs. I'm just trying to understand all this, although I was aware of the 3 gig limit as is when I ordered the machine, and it obviously didn't matter to me :D

    thanks

P.S. sorry Hollywood for straying, but I use Vista 64 Ultimate and did vote.

I already told him he needed to change that before it confused somebody and he didnt, sure enough just like I said it confused somebody!

He bought 4gb of ram, it didnt work, so he took out one of the 2gb sticks and put a 1gb stick in there so he runs with 3gb of ram not 4.

He just left his sig as 4gb because he owns 4gb and it must make him feel better about it :p

XP Pro X86, works flawless and NO issues whatsoever. I never could get my Fingerprint reader to work reliably with Vista X64.

I'm wondering if I should install Vista 32 Ultimate when I get the machine...hmmm....(I have both disks) I mean if it can't read over 3 gigs anyway, drivers are more available like my old scanner has 32 but not 64. I'm using 64 on this old ferrari 4005.

Hey Viscious, the 965PM chipset used in the G1S chipset says it supports 4 gigs max memory also. Can you point out what is different between the two so I can be enlightened? thanks :)

EDIT: if one can address 8gb, and the other one can't, is this difference due to hardware, driver or some other conflict (trade off). It's a desktop chipset supporting notebook ram (if that makes any difference)...let me check what Asus claims.

Will use Vista X86. Will probably have to dual boot XP Pro X86 next year for school (why the hell are they on Cisco LEAP?).

    Maybe wiull try Linux x64

Seriously. Should have went Ultimate X86. Instead I'm on Ultimate X64, and am only able to load a limited resource of games. Fortunately, so far that's the only problem I've encountered, minus my lack of being able to update the BIOS.....

965 chipset supports 8gb of ram address space just like I said before. Dont get it confused with the fact it can support 4gb of ram like Asus says because thats totally different than address space.

    From

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605

As you can see the 965 chipset is on that list.

Thanks for the reference Viscious. I'm just doing some catching up. 3 gb for me is good for the life of the notebook, maybe 2. I guess what was throwing me is that intel has it listed as a desktop chipset, so I'm thinking, huh? :D
