Hey guys, I need a quick answer since I ordered my laptop already but still can change to a different model.

    I have this one:
    Asus X62J-JX034V - i7-720QM 4GB/820GB Blu-ray 16"HD GT 240M n/BT W7HP64

It has a Intel Core i7-720QM with a Intel PM55 Chipset. It says max 4GB.

Is that true? I thought the max amount of GB is dependent on the chipset?

Some manufacturers lock down bios to not accept more than 4GB (for whatever reason, I Do not know) your laptop (like the G series laptops) should support up to 8GB of ram, even tho asus specifies a max of 4GB.

The price of 4-4 ddr3 is in the sky reason they still use 2-2.
Need to wait for next year for theprice to come down to the ground.
8Gb atm cost more then a notebook :p

    Thanks guys for answering.

You gimme hope, but still Id like to know for sure since 1300 euros is not that cheap. Id spend more if i needed for more max ram, but all the asus seem to suport 4 max...

that is their listed spec, but many people have tested the G5X-XX series laptops with 8GB of ram, and the G7X-XX series tested with 12 GB of ram (it has 3 slots) I'd be willing to put solid money on your laptop using 8GB of ram

Do u mean get a different one?

Even the other ones I checked with Core i7 so far, I didnt see any Asus Laptop allowing more than 4.

In the end you say its just a Bios limit? Hardware wise it should work?

The Asus X62J is not available in North America, hence the lack of detailed information and user guides. However, according to THIS german website, the X62J can support up to 8GB of ram.

Thanks David, the result I got was a laptop with Modelname Asus X62J-JX032V

Me instead I wanted to purchase Asus X62J-JX034V, but I guess mine is newer and I should be fine.

The ram's speed has nothing to do with how much the max supported ram is, has it?

Seems like it's Asus limiting it? But why? So you guys think I should go ahead and purchase?

They aren't limiting anything. That is just the max amount that they will ship with I believe. probably for cost reasons. if you check sites like GentechPC.com they allow you to upgrade most of their laptops past 4GB of ram. and yes, we think you should go ahead and purchase.

Oh btw guys, we are talking about DDR3 not 2. Anyway, i check GentechPC.com and I wish we had a shop like that in germany.

BTW my laptop looks identical with

    Asus M60j-A1 16" HD 16:9/Core i7 720QM/NV GT240M 1GB GDDR3/4GB DDR3/500GB/Blu-Ray/Win7

    on GentechPC.

Arent they all pretty much the same? Or are all laptops in the states different than ours in germany?

    It shouldn't matter if it's DDR3 or DDR2.

The M60 has a slightly different chassis than the X62, though the specs are similar. Asus has just chosen not to sell that many X series laptops in the North American market. IMO, the M series seem better built than the X series.

I'm betting if you checked with gentech they'd ship to Germany, it might be a fair bit more expensive tho.

    Better built in what respect?

From what I see all M60 in Germany have no Blu-Ray Player... Thats the difference to the X series...

What I mean is build quality. ie flex in the chassis, keyboard, screen etc.

I just called Asus, they said x62J is just a name that retailer give. It's not the actual Asus name. They said, they would need the serial number, so i guess i have to call the retailer and ask.

Basically asus says if it has a m60j mainboard, it works...

Damn, after calling the retailer, I found out thez cant check serial as thez cant open the package.

Anyway, in germany u can order things and return them for free within 14 days.

Is there a way to check with any software weather it is capable of 8gb ram?

Secondly, since this notebook has 1333 ddr3, can I take one 2gb out and replace it with 1066 mhz ddr3?

Or do they both have to be the same Mhz?
