my asus z96j with windows vista had been running hot...around 73C.
by using Notebook Hardware control, the cpu speed changes according to the load, and I remember I was getting around 50C in the past by not doing anything. But these few days, I found that my touchpad is so hot that it's almost untouchable. So I installed Notebook Hardware Control again, and my temperature is around 73C. The weird thing is in this program, the Dynamic option should change the cpu speed, but mine is always running at 1.8MHZ now, do you guys know what I can do to make my dear laptop usable again?

Your notebook is likely sufficiently old enough that it's time to clean the vents out - blockage would completely explain the slow runup in temps you describe.

I'm almost certain that you've got NHC set to MaxPerformance instead of DynamicSwitching on either the AC power, Battery or both of them - click the CPU Speed tab and check that out.

ClearSkies, I double checked the setting and it is in Dynamic Switching, but the thing is my cpu clock is not changing like I used it before.

It may be a problem with the ACPI drivers then. I'd try reinstalling them, along with NHC perhaps. An alternative is to give up NHC and try RMClock.

If the notebook is old, I'm sure a cleaning can't harm, either.
