I bought the s96j and everything seems to be running smoothly; however, I can't get the builtin camera to work. I installed the drives, but all I get is a gray box. Anyone know what to do? Thanks

hey, I'm assuming you auto-ran the CD that came with the computer. To get to the driver for the camera you need to open/explore the CD, it should be under a folder labeled "BisonCam" or something similar.

    hope this helps

Same issie reported by a few customers. Unfortunately we have not a single s96j to test. I got word back that they work just fine if you load the driver from the autorun menu. The only diff i foresee is service packs. Do you have sp2>?

go to hardware manager, and remove the cam completely
then go to add hardware, the cam will instantly be recognized, it will ask u to install the driver disk, install it and let windows install it. i had that exact grey screen problem and this fixed it

I found my answer relating to camera installation on Symmetrikal [sp?] journal. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the right page where the installation tip was on. The tip I followed is almost identical to what I found on asimobile.com's support page however and here it is verbatim:

Q: I can not install the camera driver on the S96J notebook, do you have a work around?
A: Please be advised of the workaround below that you can follow to resolve the issue:

[NOT_NECESSARY]1. Perform a clean installation of Windows XP SP2.[/NOT_NECESSARY]

    2. Install all current S96J drivers.

    3. Browse to the Camera Folder on the S96J driver CD.

    4. Browse to the BISON folder.

    5. Run "setup.bat" to install webcam driver, and then reboot the machine.

Do not run the "2ksetup.exe" file that is in the same folder where you found the "setup.bat" file.

If you have already attempted to install the D-Max camera driver, Windows XP SP2 must be reinstalled.

I tried it and it worked! I didn't have to do a clean install of windows tho. I tried every1's suggestions and when i couldn't get it, I just uninstalled and reinstalled using the setup.bat and that seemed to do the trick.

    Thanks

Now to mess around with my camera lol

Yikes! I should have paid closer attention to the 1st line of instruction. I definitely DID not have to re-install windows. Will edit that post in case some poor guy comes to this post and decides he needs to reinstall windows to install the webcam.

Guys I have the same problem on my recently bought S96J when I re-installed an XP Professional w/ SP2. Regarding the statement below:

If you have already attempted to install the D-Max camera driver, Windows XP SP2 must be reinstalled.

Should I really reinstall windows again since I believe I've tried reinstalling the D-max driver several times already. I want to try this fix when I get home later.

did you try what jsd78 mentioned? try that without reinstalling and try all the over possible fixes before reinstalling. when i first got mine i did what jsd78 mentioned and it worked fine. If those don't work...... i think you might have to.....

My camera is already working though I was not able to find the setup.bat mentioned previously. What I did was to reinstall the camera again (5th time I think) on the device manager and had my camera autodected by windows. Then I chose the only file being recognized by the install wizard (its bison something) on the installed disk and without rebooting, my camera alreday worked!

By the way this may be off-topic, but would anyone knows where one could get an ASUS logo from the net? my wife thinks the laptop seems to plain looking without it. Looks generic :)
Dealer almost did not provide us the centrino duo emblem which could have been much worst.
