I know it might sound like a daft question, but can I use my (soon to be arriving hopefully!) ASUS Win7 upgrade disk on another machine? I bought the Family pack of Win 7 when I had the opportunity so I have had Win7 on my G50 for a while now, but my father could do with a licence for Win 7. Can I give him my ASUS one? Alternatively, could I install on his machine using my Family pack media and the ASUS licence key?

Has anyone tried to do this or something similar? I don't want to try it and get a licence banned or blocked (I assume MS can do that) if I am doing something that they have deemed evil!

    Thanks for any advice,

    Richard

The OEM license is tied to the machine.

So will my Win7 licence be tied to the Vista licence that was on here already?

I guess the other question is then, can I un-register my Family licence on here and use the ASUS one (I can re-install if needed, no big deal), then install the Family licence on dad's machine?

computer->system properties->Change Product key, and use your asus one. If it isn't the same version of win7 (i.e pro/home premium) just follow this guide for downgrading to the home premium: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=424395 Then use the key previously used on your asus, in the new machine.

    Works on all.
My desktop uses notebook oem key ;)
My msi wind got slic 2.1 bios .. it used dell oem key ;)
Asus g51j-a1 come with w7 home.prem .. it has slic 2.1 bios .. used ultimate oem key .. went win7 ultimate in 5min.
It so doesn't matter, actually what asus sends out as oem upgade keys are retail keys, it uses inet activation and not bios slic 2.1 offline activation, it can be used on any pc.
Legit non legit no1 really cares, it works and that matters.

Brilliant, thanks to all for the advice!

Hopefully there shouldn't be an issue with downgrading since the Family pack was Home Premium and my G50 was Vista Home Premium.

if they are both home premium you don't need to downgrade, just switch keys.

Cool, that's what I was hoping.

Just a quick follow-up, will changing the key as you described release my Family Pack licence, and let it be activated online on another PC or will I need to call MS and do a phone activation?

it should just let you activate, as soon as you activate the Asus key on your notebook.
