So far it looks like there is pretty much just 1 configuration, is that right?
Is there a place to buy it that offers different hard drives, memory, and battery?
Thanks

tsheer,
Most likely no. But that's just what I think. I could be wrong.
Since it's preconfigured and shipped like that from Taiwan, opening th box/seal will make it 'No longer Brand new'
Unless Asus does and operate own notebook manufacturing and sales business here in the US, opening the sealed box means a lot more than 'Just opening the box'
I think Justin will have better answer for this question.
Send him an email if he does not answer here - He owns Proportable - PA -
At certain website/resellers, yes. You do give up (void) the Asus warranty but you usually get a warranty through the reseller. Again, I mentioned in another post...if they are still in business in the next couple years.

That's a good way of putting it. If you want a W5 in the US from a reputable dealer you're going to get one option. If you order it customized you're going to lose Asus' awesome global warranty and the parts from your system are going to taken out and replaced and used in someone else's machine (something not many people care about, but what if you were the other guy?) ......... We won't customize them because Asus warranty is something we don't think is worth voiding and a customer who doesn't care about it isn't one that we would like to have....

Right. You don't want to lose the warranty given by the MFG.
As a matter of fact, I was in the same dilemma. I wanted to install A/B/G Atheros Mini-PCI WIFI card but decided not to since it will avoid Asus's 3 year warranty.
I have taken out the HDD and replaced it with 7200rpm on my own but still keeping the original 40GB 4200rpm HDD from Asus. I know I can do other things with it but still keeping it just in case.
Still not so happy with Intel 2200BG but it's not worth to lose 3 year warranty.
Off the topic, what is that 'rep power' thing under the # of post?? i just noticed it. -
Thanks everyone for the responses

Changing anything technically "could" void your warranty..... but think about this logically... your hard drive and ram aren't going to kill the rest of your system.... what "could" damage it is if you physically screw up the system while playing around with those other parts..... so work carefully like anyone really would..... and you won't have a problem.
- Did you update the firmware on the router? Did you update the proset? What versions are both are you using? I want to know if it's the same as mine, because I don't have a problem with the 2200 and that router and haven't in the last year.... give me a more detailed view of how you have everything set up.
- I don't know what the rep power is, but I'm sure it's linked to something. -
Justin,
The firmware of the router is Version: v3.37.6
Mine is actually not precisely WRT54G, but it is WRT54GS - with speedbooster.
And Proset version 9.0.1.21 It is generic version driver from IBM and seems to be ok with the router now.
It sometimes drops the connection speed to 48 but picks up 54 again.
So I guess I'm happy with it. (but for some reasons, I still want to install Atheroes in W5A mainly b/c of work)
Thanks for your help Justin. I think the driver fixed the problems. -

Oh.... if you care, set your router to always 54mb/s......... it drops for many reasons, but if you have it on auto speed.... it'll go up and down.
-
I will adjust the setting to 54mb when I get home.
Thanks for the info -

There are always far too many setting to make sure everyone's on the same page...

I'd like to buy the M5A, but want to order it with 768MG Ram. Will this simple change void the warranty? Actually, the dealer (i live in Thailand) offers it with an automatic 512 upgrade if you pay in cash. Wouldnt that even void the warranty, because it was not built with the 512? (i'm assuming).

You could be.... you'll have to talk to Asus about that. They work differently in different countries, but unless you're physically buying it from Asus and your have to get it fixed at Asus, then you could have a problem.
Can I customize a W5A?
