Update: SOLVED, The poster below had the correct solution, I will add, if your new to W8.1, flicked the right side of screen to bring up, Search, then type in, Control Panel in the Search box.

The headphone/microphone combination jack is causing me pain, every time I plug in the head phone into the jack I'm forced to go into the old windows desktop to select on a Realtek audio manager that yes indeed I just plugged in a headphone. Otherwise the speakers will stay on and the headphone won't function.

This is a waste, is there any way that a default can be set that permanently configures the combo jack for headphone only? I never use a plug in microphone. I do not like this combo jack at all so far. A bad idea.

Try this, go to Realtek HD Audio Manager in Control Panel.
There's a yellow folder icon (aka Connector Settings) on the right, click on it, and uncheck "Enable auto popup dialog, when device has been plugged in".
If this jack was designated as headphone then when you plug in the headphone then you should have audio instantly, however if it was designated as microphone then you will have issue.
