Hi, I am using the CHC on my Z70VA laptop. I knew that set different speed in the TAB "CPU SPEED". MAX PERFORMANCE means full speed(1886MHz for my laptop) and MAX BATTERY(800MHz for my laptop)... If I set to MAX PERFORMANCE when I am using the battery, I hear a small like "high switching" sound from the computer. However, I change the mode to MAX BATTERY, this sound disapear. And everything is ok if I use AC adpater. I don't know if anyone found the same problem?

Yes - the difference between high performance and super performance is lcd brightness....... technically you can play with them and tweak them anyway..... but cpu power is maxed out on either of those options.

Thank you for you quick reply. Yes, you are right. But the problem is if I switched to HIGH PERFORMANCE when I am using the battery I hear a small "high frequency" soulnd. However, this sound disappear if I plug in the AC apater.

When you plug it in...... is it going into super performance or staying at high? Can you pinpoint where that sound is coming from? I'm going to guess the fan, but you tell me.

When I plug the AC, the laptop goes to super performance, and even I switch to any modes, no strange sound. I really don't know where is the sound coming from(because is like the high frequency,it's very small but noticeble). I am sure it's not fan because in the CHC, I change to MAX BATTERY mode this sound disappears and when I change to MAX PERFORMANCE this sound appears.

go into volume control, options, click advanced controls and then do the same thing and go to properties, make sure all the controls are available. Then mute everything but your Wave and SW synth. Does that do anything? If not, how about simply muting the system (FN+f10).

Thanks for your reply, flaxx. Yes, the sound is really like the "high freq noise" from the speaker. But I mute everything and still have the same situation.

oh... that's an electrical interference.... common on the lastest centrino models --- intel told me what exactly it was once but I forget.... You're only hearing this in high performance mode on battery though, right?

yes, PROPortable, only in high performance model on battery(I believe it's some kind of electrical interference). So normally every Z70VA has this interference? But I didn't see anyone metion this?

I'm trying to pin yours down..... it's not the Z70va - it's all centrino models that have come out this year and not just from Asus.... it's something on the chipset. I can look it up on Monday when I get into the office.... There are way around it, I just forget what exactly is causing it and I know that for most people they don't notice it (so it's not something talked about much).... you may very well be hearing it louder than others.

Thanks. Yes, you are right. I have to put my ear close to the keyboard in order to hear that. And thanks a lot for your quick and very useful help.

Hey ted616...I never noticed this intermittent buzzing sound until I read your thread.

Yes, there is a buzzing sound that goes off at different lengths, but it is not noticeable unless you put your ear close to the keyboard, so I wouldn't worry about it, it seems to be normal.

And hey remember, machines make noises to let us know they're working =D
    can't be totally silent~!
    Cheers,
    Mike

Hi, shampoo, yes, the buzzing sound is small, but it's noticeable in quite environment(like library). And I am afraid of that the chipsset will be damaged if this buzzing sound last a lot time.

It's not that noticeable on my unit, maybe you're just listening for it? I dunno, but I'm okay with it and no I doubt it will damage the chipset or anything like that....

I can't believe you can hear it in a quiet environment. GOOD EARS~!!! haha

    Cheers,
    Mike

My m5n has a buzzing sound when it's not plugged in, and it's when I use the touchpad. If I don't get my hand close to the touchpad, it buzzes, and kinda loud. I think it's because of the coupling between my body and the drive for the touchpad. The touchpad works on capacitive measurements, so it uses a drive frequency to excite the strips and measures capacitance.

Well, there's also a faint wee-wee-wee sound when the processor is computing. I think it's due to memory access or the speedswitching. I only noticed it when I was using prime95, but now I notice it more.

Both these might be due to dc-dc power converters in the laptop (supply is 19V, battery is 11V, so comp has to do something with the 11V, doesn't it?). I wouldn't worry about it, unless it sounds REALLY loud. Then put it behind a brick wall so you don't get flying keys in your eyes.

    Thank you.
