    I recently purchased the ASUS X53SV-RH71 at a good price considering the specs: i7 2670QM, 6GB DDR3, 15.6 (1366 x 768), GeForce GT 540M 1GB

I was wondering if it was at all possible to upgrade my display to a 1920 x 1080 screen. It seems like the ASUS N53SV 1920 x 1080 display could work with mine as they are similarly spec'd models. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I bought the same laptop and was planning the exact same thing lol. It's a shame it comes with the 720p screen. I wrote screensurgeons to see if they could find me a screen and they thought that this screen might work:
15.6" 1080p Full HD Laptop Screen with LED Backlight - Screen Surgeons

He said I could return it if it didn't. I was thinking $100 for the screen was worth the risk. Let me know if you have found any suitable screens. Maybe we can figure this thing out together.

I'm actually considering the same thing on the K53TA. I was looking at this screen:

ASUS G53JW replacement Laptop LCD Screen from $55.99 Brand-new screens (never used). The 69.99 1080p Matte screen.

One possible problem is figuring out what type of LVDS cable is included in your laptop. I know that my motherboard is 40-pin capable, but I'm not sure about my cable, so you guys might want to check yours. 1080p requires a 40-pin cable, while 768p only requires a 20-pin, so that is what might be included in your laptops.

I beleive our laptops have the 40 pin connector on the MB. I'm not sure if the LVDS cable is going to be 40 pin or not though. That screen is sure a good deal. I wish I could find a good place to get a cheap 40 pin cable though. I wouldn't even know where to start looking for one.

So have any of you gotten your new screen and made it work? I'm in the same boat. Bought an X53SV for cheap and want to put a Full HD screen in. If I can't, I'm going to return it. It didn't take long to realized I really don't like 1366x768 screens. But today is my last day to return the laptop. So, anyone had any luck? My only thoughts to add to the discussion are:

    1) If you go to LaptopScreen.com and look for their standard replacement screen for the X53SV...

( ASUS X53SV replacement Laptop LCD Screen from $55.99 Brand-new screens (never used).)

...they show a picture of a screen with the 40-pin connector in the back bottom left corner of the screen. That makes me think a 40-pin 1080 screen will work.

    2) You can get an Asus/HP LED adapter cable at screensurgeons for 15 USD:

LED Screen Adapter Cable - Screen Surgeons

The product info doesn't explicitly state that it's a 40-pin LVDS, but it has 40 pins and sure looks like an LVDS cable. I think you can also get one from LaptopScreen.com and most other replacement screen suppliers.

I know this is a new thread, but if anyone has successfully made the upgrade, it would be great to get the confirmation so I don't have to worry about my quickly evaporating return window.

    Thanks,

    Hey Guys,

I just got one of these and was a bit sad about the display. I decided I'd like to upgrade it as well. I spent all day yesterday doing a bit of research and here's what I came up with.

I did a complete teardown of the machine to determine what's upgrade-able and what is not. I also took a ton of poor quality pictures. I found out that the graphics chip is not on a standard MXM card, and cannot be upgraded. In fact, the entire motherboard is one board (uncommon, at least in my experiences). The mouse buttons are soldered directly to the motherboard. (so be nice to them!)

The DVD Combo drive can likely be upgraded to a BDROM here. You'll need to remove the front bezel and put it on the new drive. The DVD Combo drive is a panasonic model UJ8B0 with a standard SATA connector. The Panasonic UJ240 may work, but I have not tested this.

RAM, Harddrive, etc can all be upgraded obviously. I'll be sticking in a faster HDD (Stock is 5400 RPM) You may be able to add bluetooth by sticking in an Intel Advanced-N 6230 or Ultimate-N 6300.

But we're talking about screens here, and thats where I spent most of my time yesterday. Taking apart the screen is NOT easy. There are only two screws which hold it together - under the rubber pads toward the bottom of the screen. Once you take those out, the entire thing is snapped together (quite well, IMHO). Getting at the screen is a real pain in the and you may end up cracking your bezel if you aren't careful. Take it one snap at a time and get a small probing tool to push back the latches.

Inside, I found an LG Display LP156WH4(TL)(A1) with a 40 pin LVDS connector. Deciphering their product names, we can make these assumptions:
    LP (LG Phillips)
    156 (15.6 inch)
    W (Wide screen)
    H ("HD" 1366 x 768 resolution )
4-TLA1 (Something to do with the form factor of the mounting brackets)

There *is* an LP156WF1(TL)(A1) which is at full HD Resolution (1920X1080) and should have similar mounting brackets (though the images on laptopscreen are not reliable). There is one problem, however. Looking at the datasheets of the two screens reveals that the crappy screen that comes stock in the X35SV-RH71 is using a single channel 6-bit LVDS connection, whereas this better screen uses a dual channel 6-bit LVDS connection. I'm reluctant to invest in the screen until I know that this difference won't cause incompatibility. The little bit of research I did seems to show different pinouts for a single channel vs dual channel LVDS.

If I'm stuck with the crappy resolution, I'd at least like a 120 hz display for 3d purposes. I'm trying to find out if the 15.6 inch screen which comes in the Asus G51jx-3D is single channel or dual channel, and if it's compatible. I can't find the part number for the screen in that machine anywhere though.

Just thought I'd share my research.

    -Griff

Well, my research finally led me to an answer.

Sad news is: No. The screen cannot be upgraded.

The Asus X53SV-RH71 only supports single LVDS. Looking at the connections on the motherboard to the LVDS port, there is no connection for the second channel of LVDS. As such, any attempt to put in a dual LVDS screen such as the WF1 or the WD1 would result in failure.

The cable is not the issue. The motherboard only sends out one channel of LVDS, the second channel is simply no connection (as shown in the picture I took when I had the motherboard exposed).

It *may* be possible to upgrade it to a 120 hz 3D capable screen if I can find an LG Display 3 ms response time screen, but as far as resolution is concerned, I'm afraid we're out of luck. Even the 1440X900 WD1 is a 2 channel LVDS.

Edit/Update: There is no LG Display "Drop in compatible" 120Hz capable screens available. We're stuck with what we've got.
