Asus Laptop

It will run Vista, but it will lag; not only is the Atom CPU a little sluggish, but it will be further slowed by the lack of RAM. While 1GB is great for XP, it won't deliver smooth performance. Also, the graphics chip isn't enough to run Aero.

^absolutely so

i am not well educated on the intel atom however, from what i've read that particular laptop has been well recevied and praised for its zippiness and respectable productivity.
i could theoritcally turn of aero...not really useful anyways. how slow are we talking about running vista with 2 gigs installed? i really love the features and praises this laptop received. im only asking about vista because i know XP won't be around for too much longer and would like to know i have some ability to upgrade it down the road. price and features are what makes this attractable. want to use it for work and school - primarily microsoft office and other programs. -
Computers, that is.
Seriously, I think (and hope) XP will be strong a couple of years still to come. -

i personally do not believe the 10 inch screen will be an issue. i really am looking for super portability and the price range the asus was at was a sweet spot for me. do you think i am over analyzing and just need to buy it? how long do you think that laptop would last me for college/work purposes?
just curious...i really do appreciate the feedback and i am entirely grateful. -
^ For basic purposes (listening to music, internet, no games/MM), it should last at least 2 years, maybe 3. Of course, how long it lasts also depends on build quality, maintenance, and whether any major components fail (likely for all laptops).
-
not really going to but, i heard people running doom 3 and WoW without issues on it.
how is the build quality on the asus laptop? -
In as short an answer as I can give you, no.
Vista will eat up nearly 25% of the computer's existing hard drive, leaving you 60 gigs to play with, which is next to nothing lately. The computer will be pretty stressed under both the CPU and the integrated graphics chip to keep up with Vista even in "ugly" mode.
This machine will not reasonably run WoW (maybe in 640x480 with all effects off?) despite what some people have said. It just doesn't have the graphics processing.
Now, if all you wanted a computer for was basic student type work (word processing, some spreadsheets, net surfing, maybe watching some videos or listening to music) then this computer will likely work just fine. But I wouldn't recommend Vista, though you could probably put it on there. It would, however, probably make your experience really sluggish. I would stick with XP.
On that note, I'm sure there are some other machines out there that could be recommended at a good price point if you specifically said what you were looking for a machine to do.
And Asus is generally a solid build. Asus probably has the best price point for build quality.
Can this handle Vista?
