Can't turn on wireless capability

My notebook model is Asus G72GX. In order to find what was causing stuttering in my notebook, I disabled and re-enabled some devices, including the wireless card Atheros AR928x while monitoring with DCP Latency Checker. After enabling it again, I couldn't connect on the internet anymore, with windows saying that the wireless capability was turned off. I tried the following procedures, none of them worked:

Moving the wireless switch on/off on the right side of the notebook;
Pressing Fn+F2;
Uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers for the wireless;
Disabling/enabling the device again;
Enabling/disabling the device via BIOS setup;
Uninstalling/reinstalling Wireless console 3;
Full system recovery on windows partition;

Any ideas on what caused and how to solve my problem?

Phillips777, It seems that you have tried most everything.. When U say Disabling/enabling the device again;
Are you say this when you use Device manager in win 7 or VISTA?
And what does properties show in this dialog?

Or are you using control panel- network ... (Does it show as Disabled, or something else)?

 

Just like webcam on my friends pc ..
Unplug power, turn notebook off, remove battery, hold power button for 10s, reinsert battery, plug it in to the power, turn it on, webcam comes alive.
Guess that is bios hard reset just like removing bios battery on desktop motherboard.

 

JOSEA, my OS is Win7, and I used both the "Device Manager" and the "Network and Sharing Center".
In device manager, I go to "Network Adapters" and right-click on "Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter". In the dialog there are the options: Update driver software..., disable/enable (it depends if the device is disabled or not), uninstall, scan for hardware changes and properties (in "properties", tab "general", the Device status says: This device is working properly).
In Network and Sharing Center, I click on "change adapter settings". There I find the wireless device with a red X, written: Not Connected. It also doesn`t recognise any wireless network. When I right click and choose the option "Diagnose", Windows says:
Turn on wireless capability: use the switch on the fornt or side of the computer, of function keys if avaiable, to enable wireless capability on this computer.

sama98b, I tried to do what you said and nothing happend. I also tried to flash my Bios and see if the problem was solved. I also chose to "Load the default values".

Why in the world nothing seems to make it work?

 

Phillips777, could wireless be turned off on your router possibly? If you have another wireless computer can it connect? Sorry If I am pointing out anything you have already checked..
If this is your only computer can you take it to a local coffee shop or library and try to connect there?

 

Yes, I have another computer and it can detect and connect on the router wireless network.

 

Double click the Wireless Console icon in the taskbar. Does the little animation below pop up? Does it still say wifi is off? If so, try clicking the animation to turn it on. Bit of a bug that happens to my wifi sometimes, but not sure if it's any help..

 

I miracle happend, I pressed again Fn+F2, while I was going to screenshot the icon that appeared at the Wireless console and suddenly, it changes saying ON. I tried it a million times, with all combinations of BIOS enable/disable, physical switch on/off, and it wasn't working. The only recent change I made in my system was installing a 3G connection by an USB device. Do you think it may be related? Anyway, thanks for the replies. The icon that appeared always (whenever I moved the switch on and off of pressed Fn+F2) is on the attached image, which is the OFF icon.

 

I have had this happen numerous times, I ended up uninstalling the card (in device manager) removing the driver and reinstall it using the driver from Asus. You must have the switch on when you do this and enabled obviously in the bios.

After the installation shutdown the machine unplug it, pull the battery hold the power button. Put it back together turn it on, should work. Just do not use the wifi switch I have found this seems to mess with the drivers and windows 7 with that card or its a power mgt issue with that card I dont know. Just that when I hit the switch it always messes up. (I dont have this problem with my G60vx with the Intel 5100.

If you power it down sometimes the fn=f2 works but it just does not like both.

 

This seems to be a standard ASUS featured failure in their laptops... Or maybe standard faire on Wintel gear(?)

I've had this (like Phillips777) happen again on my G51 (upgraded wifi+BT card) it also used to happen with the original Intel5100 and on my ASUS F3JP from years ago...

On the G51vx, my Ralink based card was shown as disconnected (in the notification area) and nothing I did with the switch cycles & function key combos & manufacturer software seemed to change it.

However, today after a few short minutes of the same software settings of Fn+F2 and control panel checks I did the following and resolved it;

• Make certain hardware switch is set to on position
• Slowly cycle/toggle Fn+F2 with 15 second interval to allow "show" on desktop and in notification area of wifi activation

.....after doing these steps;

• Check Device manager/Network Adaptors (Ensure no exclamation marks/ notices)
• Check Device manager/Network Adaptors/(Right click) relevant device/Scan for changes
• Check Device manager/Network Adaptors/(Right click) relevant device/ Properties/Power tab
• Checked Control panel/ Power options

I had forgotten how much of a PITA this had been before and how slow the "Visual reports" are on the display and in the notification area...
