Hi, I'm thinking about ordering a Laptop from the US Stores to Toronto, Ontario.
What fees are applicable, and how much are they?
Using "thefinalcost.com", it says I have to pay: duties, tax, conversion, brokerage, and disbursement.
Has anyone in Canada ordered a laptop from the US Before? Is this everything I have to pay? That's a lot of fees...
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
What about just ordering from a Canadian retailer, i.e. NCIX? They should get the Montevina updates soon, as Asus NA in Fremont covers both the US and Canadian markets.
-
I bought a used Asus from the US and had to pay an extra $100 US in duty fees and taxes.
-
$100 isnt even that bad.. it depends on whether they check it or not really. Sometimes you get lucky and they just put it through for free, sometimes you get owned. I wouldnt mind picking one up from the states but I've got another month and a half before I actually need it for school. Should be a good couple of line ups comin out sooooon.

If you are unlucky
$65 UPS/FEDEX brokerage
5% GST + your PST
Customs
If you're saving not more than $150 I think it's not worth the risk. -
yea, thats definitely true.
-
If I get unlucky, it pretty much comes out to be the laptop plus 13% tax (as if I just purchased at a local store anyways)
-
If you buy out of province, you save one tax. Because of that, 95% of my purchases are from NCIX/DirectCanada which is based in B.C.
-
Same, but I definitely wouldn't order laptops from them. They are overpriced in that department.
-
It's the MSRP.... I bought my C90S at directcanada. Only place I could get it for less than $300 more than in the US (My config cost me $1583 with taxes) -
Which laptop are you looking for anyway?
-
I bought my Asus F8SN-B1 off ExcaliberPC and got him to ship it to the states. I was going to get him to mail it to a PO box and then I would just go down and pick it up and drive back up, but luckily my friend lives across the boarder and I just shipped it to him and he brought it up for me.
This is illegal of course since he nor I would of declared it. -
You're lucky to have a friend in the states. I know many people in the states, but none that I would entrust with a $1500 laptop.
-
Ya it's good having close friends that are right next to the boarder. He actually paid for it on his CC and everything and I paid him back when he was able to drive it up.
-
I'm looking at... Asus M50VM-B1 or the Sager NP2096 from XoticPC or GenTechPC.
-
NCIX has the M50 for $1474, only 75 more than gentech. Why take the risk?
-
I'm actually leaning towards the np2096 because it has the 9600GT version instead... but I can't find any Canadian resellers of the compal JHL90/sager 2096
-
http://www.eurocom.com/
If you call them, they sometimes price match Sager. It's the only Clevo resseller in Canada, I don't know if they have the newest ones though. Which Clevo is the np2096? Eurom has the M860TU at a good price (but don't buy Windows from them, it's a scam). $1400 with a P8400 & a HD 3870 -
Getting newer notebooks such as the M50vm is almost 200 dollars cheaper to buy from NCIX.
-
Oh, I believe the SAger NP2096 is COMPAL JHL90. Not clevo.
-
Ya when I bought my laptop from the states, I saved $150 + tax. So a total of around $230ish
-
You were lucky then
-
Is that M50 with the Montevina chip? If not, how long until ncix gets it?
(how is NCIX.com with shipping and policies?) -
Yes, it's the new montevina chip. It's going to be a week or two until NCIX gets it. Shipping is pretty good - costs like 20-30 dollars from what I recall. I've never had a problem with their shipping when I purchase from NCIX.
-
NCIX is Canada's newegg
-
lol yeah it seems like it. But where can I find resellers of Compal JHL90? Eurocom only has clevos, but the sager 2096 is not clevo
