ATI released the 6.10 drivers for both desktops and notebooks. I use the default drivers that came with my ASUS W3J ... Is there any reason why I should not update my drivers? Is it a good thing to update them?
For my desktop, I try and stay current with any drivers.

Consider the Omega drivers for a little performance boost.

Is there anyone out there that is using the 6.9 without any problems at all, or would it be better to go with the 6.8?
-
can someone post pro & cons for updating video drivers in a laptop?

Generally speaking the pros are slight increase in performance. Most of the time you can see the slight increase in your 3DMarkXX benchmarks. Other good things is that it can have some bug fixes and or modifications to existing aspects of the drivers. All in all its good to keep up to date with GPU drivers.
However there are definate cons for GPU drivers, for example things may not work right, games perform worse and so much more. Others believe that if it works stick with it don't change. I suggest do what ever you feel most comfortable with.
In the case with ATI you have Omega and Ati drivers in which the Omega drivers generaly give higher performance, mainly because it overclocks the GPU slightly, however this is totaly up to user discretion to use it. -

I would also like to point out that a good thing that can come out of updating GPU drivers is a cooler and less noisy GPU. The flip side is definately a possibility aswell.
However Bios updates to the motherboard also takes care of heat, fan, and noise problems aswell, so keep an eye out for that too. -
well couldn't use the mobility drivers 6.10 from the ati site. Could you guys suggest some current drivers that work for the W3J?
-
I am using 6.10 at the moment and so far I'm not impressed.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic dosnt work now, Gothic 3 crashes more often, and they still havent fixed the PowerPlay issue where my W3J wont load windows when on battery.
Stick with what you got, im going back to 6.9 -
where did you find the 6.9 drivers? And you don't have issues with them?
-
nope the 6.9 drivers worked great for me. I got them off the mainsite awhile back. I can send them to you over AIM if you PM me your info or what ever. Im going to give 6.10 a try again and actually test powerplay as well as weather or not it will fix my dark messiah issue. Dark Massiah DID work perfectly on my machine ... now not so much since ive been fussing about with settings ...

And if you want to get the latest mobility catalyst drivers direct from ATI this link will always get them for you without having to go through their mobile video card validation http://ati.amd.com/online/mobilecatalyst/

Only issue I have had with the Mobility drivers is they won't let me change the refresh rate, as it shows 60Hz as my only option. So I just use the regular drivers and modify the inf to recognize my x1600 and now I can run my LCD at 85Hz again.
-
If it aint broken.. don't fix it
-
shrug, problem is its always broke in some way or another and hey, i like performance boosts.
to my knowledge they STILL have not addressed the PowerPlay bug. -

Mobility Catalysts 6.8 are still the sweet spot in recent releases.
6.9 and 6.10 do not deliver enough positive things to advise to upgrade. -

So you arent doing anything to your LCD.
All LCD's operate at either 60 or 65hz, forgot which one, but it doesnt cause the flickering because its an LCD compared to CRT. -
Hrmm ... I might roll back to 6.8

^ odd. very odd.

It maybe odd but it works, so I can't complain. Funny part is, my Toshiba worked fine at 100Hz(even though it showed it could go up all the way to 160Hz).
