I started shopping for a new notebook today and every time I try to visit www.asus.com (for the "select your country" screen) Norton Antivirus pops up with a "virus detected" error about the files bmw2.pig and bmw3.pig containing Trojan.Anicmoo.

I also note that attempting to directly visit the usa site - usa.asus.com - comes up with a server error, so I think they might have an issue... just a caution.

EDIT: hmm, they seem to be working fast... the virus error is no longer appearing, although usa.asus.com is still down. If I could edit the title I would.

That's because they fixed the virus problem about 5 minutes after I posted, as I placed in my edit. Which was nearly 3 hours before your post :)

However ever since usa.asus.com has been down for "maintenance".

Haha, McAfee is one of the few things worse than Norton. It's soooooo slow. Back in the mid 90s it was alright (not many choices back then) but it feels like they haven't changed the engine since. We have McAfee at work and the IT folks tell us to turn it off for file IO intensive tasks.

I use AVG Free and it detected the virus during the nightly scan.

So there was a virus. Guess my Norton live updated at the right time to catch it.

I fully agree that Norton products are a system nightmare, and have personally experienced more than a few compatibility issues with them, but if you know how to properly configure them (what to leave enabled and what to disable - the default settings aren't good) they can be quite effective *and* not completey screw up your system or performance. Just stay away from the multi-product bundles and remember that "complete install" is a bad idea.

I only use Norton on my primary computer; on 3 others I use AVG Free and have been quite pleased with it (especially considering the cost).

Avast Home Edition (Free) with Resident Shield is great.

I was affected by the virus. I put together a white box Asus for my daughter and installed AVG last, only to find it infected with a trojan horse. I was astounded because I could not figure out how that could have happened since I had only installed the basic software.
