Hello, I would like to change the GPU of the Asus A8Jr as it sucks. May I know is this possible (seems possible as GPU is not soldered to motherboard)? If this is possible, may I know how I can get a GPU that fits into the free space. Thank You. Attached is the disassembly guide which I found for the Asus A8 series which shows that I can remove the screws for the GPU and then slide it out.

But can't I buy the NVIDIA Geforce Go 7700 which is fitted to the Asus A8Js and fit to the Asus A8Jr. The GPU compartment is of the same size and should be working perfectly well as everything about the casing is the same (A8 series), although I think it is difficult to get hold of the specific NVIDIA card designed for the A8 series.

Sure you can buy it if you find, sure you can set it in if you can.

But where can I buy it from? Any websites or organizations specialize in selling laptop GPUs?
-
I think this is the Geforce Go 7700 used in the A8JS. It's at the Asus Estore for $140. You'll probably to mod the BIOS to get it to work, if you fail at it your screen won't display properly.
-
Why do I have to mod the BIOS? And how do I do it?
-
I know the Estore doesn't sell it, but it may be technically possible to get an F8 graphics card, ie; 9500m GS. I looked at the A8 assembly and the whole setup almost looks identical to my F8. The socket and screw locations are the same.
However, there's no guarantee this would work, to be honest I'm only speculating. To this date nobody has any information on this. -
It is theoretically possible to change the graphic card if it of MXM (Mobile PCI Express Module) type.
You have to see if your notebook has a MXM type of card or not.
Here is a link to an online store where they also give some more info about this:

It's not true MXM, it looks like an MXM-based variant that ASUS designed. The socket does look MXM, but the mounting screws are not in the correct location and formfactor/slot looks like it's reversed. However, that being said, all the ASUS GPUs(except C90) use this same MXM variant, see G50V, F8/A8, M50V/S etc.

The A8JR's BIOS probably isn't made to recognize the Geforce Go 7700 GT, so you'd have to get remove the original video card from the A8JR's bios and replace it with the 7700. The problem with this is that if the switch doesn't go flawlessly, your original video card probably won't be recognized if you try to use it again. You'll probably have to do a blind BIOS flash to get it working again.
MMTool should be able to replace the original video card from the A8JR's BIOS with the 7700 GT in the A8JS's BIOS.
Are you sure? In the link it says it's an "A8JS VGA_NB7P-GT_BD./AS"; NB7P-GT stands for Go 7700 GT. -
Did you read? I wasn't talking about the 7700 GT, if you were buying a better card, why would you buy something that's 2 generations old?
-
It seems I misinterpreted the first sentence it as two separate ideas. The 7700 GT may be old but it's still quite a bit better than the X2300, though it's still worse than the 9500M GS.
-
Do they sell the ATI Mobility Radeon X1700 from the A8Jp?
-
No, don't think the A8 came in that config ever.
-
oh. well it's not on the estore. But why x1700?
-
it's better than the 7700 according to NotebookReview.
