I'm getting a W3V from notebookshop.de (I'm getting the 2nd one from the bottom, with 1.73Ghz PM CPU)

There you can choose HDs. I'm looking for 80GB atleast. And the choices I have are these:

    1. Toshiba 5400rpm 80GB 16MB Cache MK8026GAX
    2. Hitachi 7200 rpm 80GB 8MB Cache 7K80 <-- I Really want this one!
    3. Seagate 5400rpm 100GB 8MB Cacha ST9100823A (Momentus 5400.2)
    4. Hitachi 5400 rpm 80GB 8MB Cache 5K80

If you were in my shoes..

If you really want the 7200rpm, you should get it. I don't really mind the 5400 hitachi. I wanted the 16mb cache on the Toshiba at first, but heard the numbers were great, but the actual processing wasn't much of a difference to the 5400 hitachi. So I chose that one, the 7200 wasn't out yet. :(

    Is the 7k80 even out?

And It's gonna cost quite a bit, $350~ USD maybe?

I don't quite know what your needs are for the laptop, but I'll say 5400rpm should be good enough, unless you need a 7200

Seagate makes a nice performing drive with a great warranty and the power consumption of a 4200rpm.

At the same time, I'm not aware that hitachi released any new 7200rpm drives, anywhere in the world, yet. Their 80/100/120 gb 7200rpm drives aren't due out till some time in August.

For a W3 though, I'll tell you right now, unless it's going to be used for performance 24/7 ...... that 100gb/5400rpm Seagate is the best choice.

you do know that your e-penis is related to the size of your HD and not the speed of it. :asus:

Thanks for all the lighning fast replies! That's what I call feedback!

According to the site they'll have the 7K80 in one week..

The 100GB 5400rpm Seagate is also the priciest in the bunch..(199EUR) Porhaps I'll get another drive and buy the 80GB 5400 Seagate..?

EDIT: But if I buy the HD elsewhere I have alot more options. So which 80GB+ HD would you recommend?

Well we've been waiting for those drives all summer, and still don't have anything...... if you were going to get another hard drive later, then I'd just get say a 40gb/5400rpm and wait till the 120gb 7200rpms come out and pick one of those up if you really want it.

I'd also like to point out that I prioritize quietness very high! I'm an avid silentpcreview.com member. And they recommend the 5K80 from the acoustical point of view..

Seriously? I love my hitachi and seagate drives.. and thats the reason we use them..... but I can't say that Hitachi's drive was any quieter than Seagates....... but it's nice to know that's what they think, regardless.

Heat is an issue you shouldn't forget to consider with the 7200 rpm drives. Unquestionably, the system will be hotter.

Via Firewire, I put all my high performance drives outside the system (be it notebook or desktop). All told, I have well over a terabyte of drives. With that many drives, heat and noise does become an issue, no matter what drives you're using. What I like about doing it this way is that the laptop doesn't have too much stuff going on (my 60 gig internal is plenty) and I can also use the drives on my desktop system.

Best of all - I can keep the heat and noise away from me via a six foot firewire cable

Obviously, most people won't need the kind of drive capacity I'm talking about. They're primarily for video editing.

the 7k80 is available where i am, it costs approx USD$280

whats the actual performance improvement between a 5400rpm and 7200rpm hdd? will programs, etc load faster? windows boot faster? all other things being equal, of course.

Theorectically it should, so it will boot faster, so will , obviously, navigating through folders, as well as saving/encoding/etc. :)
