I recently purchased an Asus N61VN and am having a problem with the touchpad. The people on this board seem very knowledgable so I figured I would run it by you to see if you have any suggestions.

    THE PROBLEM
Out of the box, the laptop's touchpad was tracking very poorly. Cursor movement is choppy and when I try to hover over something it bounces around.

WHAT I'VE TRIED THAT HASN'T WORKED
-Adjusting the touchpad sensitivity and all other options
    -Calling Asus tech support
    -Updating the Elan touchpad drivers
-Restoring Windows 7 to its factory setting
    -Downloading all available Windows updates

THE ONE THING THAT HAS WORKED A BIT
I have gotten results from one thing. I completely uninstalled and deleted the Elan drivers from the system. The default Windows 7 drivers took over.

    Immediately, the cursor moved smoothly.

The drawback is that I lost all the Elan touchpad extra functionality (like scrolling). I'm also concerned the problem will get worse and I'll lose my window to return it to Asus.

Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same problem - Are all the ELAN touchpads crap or is mine just malfunctioning?

I *had* the same problem and it's not entirely the touchpad, actually I think it's entirely the drivers. What I found elsewhere was just switch the driver from the ELAN to PS2 and it seems to work just fine.

Start --> Control Panel --> Device Manager --> Mouse
Change the driver from the elan driver to the "Standard PS/2 Port Mouse".

Jerkyness is gone but most if not all the gestures are there. The ELAN drivers allow for the customization of the sensitivity of these features. Personally I think the ELAN drivers blow.

Note: If you do this change under a username the change will only apply to this username. Why I am saying this? Well, in my case, on the login screen it's still jerky as hell, but once I login everything is fine again.

I am glad this is helping other people, but I am still not happy with it at all. I hate "tap to click" but I cant turn it off now, and the cursor wont disappear while typing, etc. Has anyone come up with an improved solution?

    Thanks!
