    Hi,

I recently received my new Asus G1S notebook. To my great disappointment it came only with an Asus recovery disc, not a Vista installation DVD. I really want to do a clean install of Vista. Is there any way that I can create a Vista installation DVD from what I have or is there any other way that I can obtain one?
    Thanks in advance!

    Oh, now the interesting trick.
You use the recovery DVD to recover the window (warning : It will wipe the partition that it will be recovered to) and then when it demands a drivers CD don't give the CD to it. At this point you have a fresh Vista installation (this at least was the trick for Windows XP but I think it's the same for Vista)

Download Vista from MS and burn the ISO onto a DVD. Use that to install the OS, and then type in the license from your G1S when prompted. That should do the trick.

I'm not sure that does the trick. The Vista that comes with the computer has an OEM serial number -- I'm unsure if the downloadable kit (wherever that would be) accepts OEM s/ns.

You'll have to pay to download off Windows Marketplace. My suggestion is to ask your friends or colleagues if they have a copy of the Vista DVD (will work too). Or go the bittorrent way (no way im going to recommend you that!) ;)

I tried that with my dv9000t and it did not accept the OEM s/ns. However, at that point the software gives you a number at microsoft to call. I called, explained that I was doing a clean install, read off the number off the bottom of the laptop and the gave me a new s/ns.

Thanks for the review. Like to ask, what is the speck of the desktop you were comparing it to. And also, how does the screen look in comparison to your desktop LCD? I hear that it's dual lamp, and wonder how bright it really is (not the spec as spec sheets NEVER measure true.)

Thank you very much for your ideas guys! The trick with using the recovery DVD, but not giving the driver CD to it works pretty well, so I'll stick with that one for now.

I was told by one of the computer selling guys (it was weeks back so I forget who) that OEM keys wont work with the retial/upgrade.

Infact OEM shouldnt even have a key does it??

I have dells OEM and it has no key with it, its just bound to the computer it comes with.

Some OEM have explicit keys that need to be used during installation. For both my ASUS laptops it's like that.
