So I just got my A8Jp and in the hour or so I have played with it I've only come across one problem (I'll take care of the partitioning and probably do a reinstall with the recovery disk later). The problem is that the hard drive makes a noise I've never incountered before. During boot up, for a little while after (while the huge task tray loads up), and during shutdown, there is, on and off, a clicke or crackle type noise coming from there the hard drive. Does anyone know anything about this or has experience with it? Problem? Normal? Ok? Send it in for repair now? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is most likely movement / parking of the head(s) which make a clicking noise. In my experience Toshiba HDDs tend to be the noisiest, followed by Hitachi. If it is a Hitachi HDD, you can use Feature Tool to change the noise level. Less agressive head movement will make less noise, but also cause a slight reduction in performance which you are unlikely to notice in normal use. Seagate and Fujitsu HDDs are reasonably quiet while the most recent Samsung HDDs are very quiet.

Either use Device Manager to see the HDD model number and then use Google to find what matches the model number; or use software such as Sandra to tell you all about your hardware (and a lot else).

Please report back on your findings.

Here is an interesting twist. Turns out the hard drive is made by Seagate.

Anyone else have any info? Good, bad, and ok, are all still on the table it seems

Another up date... according to Asus Tech Support, it is not supposed to click, so I'm planning to drop it off with them Monday.
