Hey, so my hard drive has recently been making this clicking noise, which I'm pretty sure is not a good sign. Is there anything I can do to preserve the life of my hard drive? Its getting closer to 2 years now, and I'd be pretty disappointed if it died so soon. I'm wondering why its making these noises too...anyone know? Do you think ASUS would be any help (replacing the HD?) I doubt it because the HD hasn't died yet, but do you think it'd be worth a shot? I just don't want my warranty to run out and then have it die on me...heh.

Mechanical drives are prone to fail after a certain amount of use. If your notebook is still under warranty, Asus will replace the hard drive for you. If not, most hard drive manufactures have a 3 year warranty, and you could contact them directly for a free replacement (you'll be required to pay one shipping cost).

What is this "clicking" sound? Does it affect the peerformance?

Could be power saving or "fall protection" features if it's a normal sort of single tick sound that happens every 15 minutes or so, and not a grinding or severe clacking... for instance I have a G50V that aggressively parks the heads on the hard disk (makes a click sound). There's a setting in the BIOS called something like "free fall protection" which I disabled and it parks less frequently. Just an idea... if it's making bad clacking sounds that have abnormal patterns, that are outside of the regular noise your disk makes, it could be time to BACK UP YOUR DATA to prepare for the worst. Good luck.

Hard drive failures don't necessarily have to be due to clicking sounds. I recently replaced a hard drive due to a SMART error prompting me during boot. Everything still worked just fine (performance wise), but the error is a sign of a failing hard drive.

That's very true, but if the OP has recently observed these clicking sound that hasn't occurred in the past ~2 years, it's probably a characteristic of a failing drive.

Yeah, it is most likely failing, but my thought was maybe the OP reset their BIOS or had a recent update... anyways, worth a thought... :D
