Hi guys, I'm close to buying a Asus laptop. I have two options: the new N80 (one with the 2.4 processor) or the G50VT-X2. Things stopping me is that I will be going up to my main campus (PSU) and I really don't want to lug around my desktop (from my house to the apartment near the campus (4 hr drive between the two)) which is water cooled and I dont want to take chances of it leaking while moving it back and forth to my house and back to my apartment thus averaging in the weight of my desktop. I am a gamer (currently COD4).

Things that I worry about are battery life and weight. I really don't worry about carrying a 7 .lb laptop with me but its the battery life. I would be soo glad with the 9800gts since it'll game-proof me a couple of years. I am also a electrical engineering student and I'll be using some design programs. I've read the g50 (one with the 9700gt) gets about 1 hr and 45 mins to 2 hrs MAX of battery life. Will the G50VT-X2 get even worse then this? I know the n80 will have the 9650gt, but will it be sufficient for games in 2 years?

Also when comparing the n80 its only 14 inches and even more portable then the g50. I simply don't know what laptop to get. Help. :)

EDIT: Questions I had about the g50 were does 32 bit drivers come along with the laptop because to use internet in my uni I have to have the cisco VPN client and they only support 32 bit OS's.

I think because you have such a badass desktop you should get the 14.1" Asus N80.

For sure, as long as you keep the resolution at 1200*800 medium across the board, I think it will do great.

    Hope this helps :)

Since you're concerned about size/weight and battery life, I'd go with the N80; the G50 is quite a beast to lug around. After all, it does rival the weight of some 17" notebooks.
As long as you don't run GPU intensive games at high res and detail, the 9650 should do fine for the next couple years.

The battery life on both is comparable. You may get just a tad more on the n80.
9650 is probably not going to cut it in 2 years. neither is the 9800 but it is considerably better

hmm; First, thanks for the helpful replies. geared2play.com, I've read from one of your recent posts that the new Asus' laptops with LED screens doesnt really make a difference to battery life. If there isnt much margin of a difference then I might as well buy the g50 (the weight difference between them is what? a pound? (6 lbs. VS. 7 lbs.)..hmm still thinking and comparing.. buying laptops suck. lol

EDIT: Are there 32 bit drivers included in a CD that comes with the laptop?

It's a 9800M GS, not GTS. Although, many have claimed the GS is just a underclocked GTS.

I am looking at the G50VT-X2 as well and was wondering if it comes with a 64-bit operating system. I am worried it doesn't because every laptop that comes with 64-bit has it labeled as such and this just says Vista Home Premium. The problem with having a 32-bit OS here is that it can only page a total of 3gb of system RAM which means that since it has a 512mb card it would only be able to use 2.5gb of the 4gb system ram installed. If this is the case I wouldn't buy the laptop as a 64-bit OS for me is a must.

Can anyone shed some light on the situation?

32-bit OS can address 4GB of memory, and the GPU together with other memory-mapped devices will cut from that amount, not from 3GB. So you will still get more than 3GB of RAM addressable with a 32bit OS.

That being said, I'm sure a google search, or one of the resellers or people who bought it will let you know whether the OS is 32 or 64 bit.
