Anyone interested in the Samsung Q30 and/or Dell X1?

It seems Asus and others are waiting to see how well these products will sell in the ultraportable 12.1" widesreen market and only will react later?

Basically, the X1 is contract made by Samsung for Dell with minor changes/improvements for corporate uses - built-in bluetooth and anti-spill keyboard, BUT these increase the thickness from 0.90" to 0.98" and weight from 2.39lb to 2.50lb configured at 3 cell battery. The X1 boasts a 6-hr battery life with the 6-cell battery at the weight of mere 2.8lb.

It is sad that Asus could not follow the S5 series with an ultraportable/under 3lb widescreen, 1-spindle, thin-profile laptop. The W5a is very nice, but could not compete with system at 2.5lb.

The Samsung Q3 is priced at $3300+ at Dynamism.com and Dell X1 is priced at $1599+.

    Art,

Don't be too surprised.... Asus has has the S200 for a couple years now and the S300 just came out this year. You can find them on the Taiwanese site: http://taiwan.asus.com.tw/products/notebook/nbindex.htm

They are just too small to bring over because the market for something that small is sooooo small that Asus feels they would only be able to sell a VERY few.

    Thanks,
    Justin

    Art,

    Right...

The S200 and S300 are only being sold through whoever will sell JVC.. becasue JVC bought the rights to those models and Asus (even though it's too small for them here), would be contractually bound to not compete in that same market if JVC has the US for those models.

    Thanks,
    Justin

No, this is neither a Samsung nor a Dell forum, but everyone can express his or her opinions about related products and how well in the head-to-head competition. I think Asus USA reps would also be interested in the reponse of the market to the Q30/X1 in the US.

The older S200, S300 of Asus can only be sold in Asia countries, the absolute minimum laptop screen (for mass market, not niche customers) in US is 12". That's the reason why IBM and Dell now do not offer laptops with LCD smaller than 12". So, I would not compare S200/S300 of less than 10" screens with the Q30 or X1.

TO Asus, there is no any technical difficulties to make a 1-spindle system of W5a; just like the S5 and the M5. Their only concern is the market acceptance and I think Asus will do it when it sees the good sale numbers of Q30/X1.

I'm just curious what sort of professionals would use such a small notebook. Would it be people who are mostly doing word processing or something of that sort? I'm just curious because I've never seen anyone with anything that small!

Actually, my Data Structures professor uses a REALLY tiny Sony laptop. I didn't ask him about it, but I'm thinking it's roughly a 10". He uses it for lectures so it's easier for him to carry it around I guess.

For people spending most of time on airplane and train using laptop on the tray table, the depth of the X1/Q30 is about just fit for most trays of thinkable seats. The depth of the tray on Amtrak train is about 8.0", so you can think that 12" widescreen is just right, better than the very popular Fujitsu's P7010 of 10.6" widescreen LCD with 1280x768 resolution.

Even the S5n has a depth of 8.8", slightly bigger than fitting to tray comfortably and you have to be cautious that the screen won't be crushed when the person sitting in front of you suddenly inclining the back position.

I can say an S5 is slightly large for an airplane tray, but a W5 is better....... would be even better if it were an inch shorter.

People who recline their seats should be exiled from society. Unless they are 6'6" or something, it sure does drive me crazy. I always want to conk them on the head, especially when you're doing something on the tray and they recline all the way back suddenly. Grrr. [:)]

Ya, and children who kick the back of your seat.

We'll send all of them to their own little island (big island actually) or maybe we'll just force them to take different airplanes from the rest of us CIVILIZED people.
