I'm going to buy a new Asus V6Va for professional use (engineering and architectural visualisation), where color reproduction, contrast and angle of view are important factors.

I've found two different models, one with an IPS (In Plane Switching) LCD Panel, the other with "Color Shine" feature...

The latter (Color Shine), is more expensive, not so much but about 200 euros.

Seller tells me IPS technology is obsolete and now, glossy screens with a wider angle of view, use "Color Shine" technology.

    What do you think about?

Till yesterday, reading Zamil Akhtar's A6Va review,

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2720

I thought IPS and "Color Shine" were used together in same LCD panel, instead now I discover they're different features.

So, may someone be so kind to advise me what to buy ?

    Regards.

The ips has a wider viewing angle out of any lcd tech right now for laptops. you can stand up look down on the laptop and still see the screen fine. all the best graphics lcd monitors by NEC and LACIE use IPS tech it has a higher color bandwidth and large viewing angles. No other laptop screen can compare when it comes to viewing angles.

And colorshine isnt a technology. Its just a gimmick name for a glossy.

great..... i love it when people copy and paste their posts and email them to me........... so I HAVE to answer them.

At least in here everyone can read it it.

Worldwide there is also just a "colorshine" screen with out "IPS" .... this will be what the next generation of V6's will have and what most countried ordered for the V6va..... If they do not claim "IPS" directly, you've obviously got to question it......... considering it's not something the average person would probably know how to look for.... it's rather important to know the difference and it's a HUGE selling point..

Find someone who knows what they're talking about.

Thank you, SRD, for your plain answer.

So, if an Asus V6Va is not made with a "Color Shine" LCD panel I have to deduce it is made with IPS LCD panel ?

I answer it because it seems seller was not so secure if one of two V6Va in his stock was fitted with an IPS LCD panel...

    Models code are:
V6VA-F022P (may be IPS ??) and
V6VA-X024P (should be a "Color Shine" panel).

Is there some possibility first one uses "conventional" and cheaper TN (Twisted Nematics) LCD instead of a more expensive IPS panel ?

I wouldnt deduce anything. The ones with IPS state on the sticker on the palm rest that they are IPS. The ones in the US are all IPS the ones outside are not. It may not be even available outside the US im not sure. But if it doesnt have the color shine i suppose its a possibility its a matte screen. like the V6V i really dont know. i mean maybe you can ask the dealer to take it out of the box and look at the sticker. but i wouldnt just guess and say it has it.

Excuse me, Justin, for double post and for contacting privately by e-mail but I have had some problem with my connection and I was not sure to have posted message in this Board...

Anyway, thank you for reply... as above quoted, you say "Worldwide there is also just a Color Shine" screen without IPS"...

Well instead, I can assure in France there are several V6Va sold in internet shops with IPS panels and vendors highlight this in product characteristics... unfortunately it seems they don't sell outside France.

In Italy there are not all these informations in product details but I don't think it entirely depends on sellers but, rather in Asus itself: why no only a word about IPS in its products catalogs?

No words about in brochures and in web catalog and there is no way to realize differences between model numbers as, instead, other brands make in their web site (IBM).

And in the end, worst thing, I've contacted Asus two days ago directly but, till now, no reply about this issue.

What I meant was that in the US we've got one model........... around the world, some places also got IPS screens..... but they also got just colorshine screens..... so I meant there could be plenty of confusion there....... and then there are others that JUST got the colorshine models... and some that still got just the matte panels.

Where are you in Italy? I know a couple places that should be able to help you... but it depends on where you are.

Let me correct you - becasue we're talking about the V6va - not he A6va.

Give Asus a call @ 199-400089 and get a current location for their dealers in the area. There's a place just off the Campo San Polo (I forget the name) but I visited them not too long ago when I was in the area as they have actually bought from us in the past.. They know what they're talking about and should have them or at least be able to tell you the truth.

Yes, sorry for the misname, we are always talking about V6Va.

...you know Venice very well if you know campo San Polo ! Do you visit Italy so often?

Tomorrow mornig I'll call Asus Italia to find a location for their dealers in zone...

Anyway, I place a link to an information table about Asus notebook product codes I think all you will find of some interest:

    What do you think?

    Interesting, doesn't it?

Don't ask me where I have stolen it ! :D

Only been to Venice twice but have plenty of family ties up and down Italy.... Venice was probably one my favorite places..... If I could move there and set up a small shop, I'd give up everything I have.. There's just something about the narrow paths that make it very cozy and friendly....

You're exactly correct with that table... "F" is the code for IPS..... just like "B" is the code for bluetooth...... but those codes are written on the outside of the box along with codes for everything from cpu to ram to hard drives, etc.... so they are a little difficult to decode..
