In person, it didn't look too decent. I'v more or less picked up there is no difference between the 8J models, except the gpu, processor etc.

Didn't look too decent compared to... ? I think it still looks better than lots of notebooks out there in stores..

But yeah, they should be the same screens for all A8 models

Well, i found the inspiron 640m's screen to look nicer (it might just be the level of gloss).

i have the 8Jm, and my bro has the upgraded 640m (e1405)
    it's 1440*900.
    it's significantly better.
i'm still happy with mine though as who else has a 14.1" with a 7600??? :)

ok, you kinda got me there, but not really, as that's only available in the UK.
    it also lacks DVI, and is 1280x768 (which means it's a 14", NOT a 14.1" :) )
this for me is a deal breaker.
i wanted DVI. and i had to have true 16:10 AR
also, for some unknown reason, the battery life is inferior to the A8Jm even though the specs are really close

actually 1280 by 768 is widescreen. if it was 14in it would be 1024 x 768

Well, the screen may be outmatched in contrast and brightness, but you're forgetting about response rate which is a huge factor for a gaming notebook. I doubt the Dell will play games without more noticeable ghosting.

the a8J's color and crystal shine is nice, however viewing angle and response rate isnt as good as a desktop lcd. having said that i'd choose a glossy screen over any other screen because of the vivid and beautiful colors it produces.

that isn't what i was saying.
    i was saying that 1280*768 wasn't 16:10 aspect ratio.
    of course it's still widescreen.
i was saying that it's 14" and not 14.1", which is true (thus the different AR).
the powernotebook notebook is great. i'd forgotten about it.
it is "only" 256mb of ram on the gfx card...lol
i also remember hearing it's gpu was underclocked.
    it doesn't have DVI.
although it does have a 9 cell battery, a BIG plus.
    it's also available with bluetooh (however at $40 it's a rip-off upgrade)
it's also about the same price as the asus, which i think is cheap (although that's only if you get it without windows, else it's about $100 more expensive than the asus)

tough choice between those 2 for best 14" (although asus's has a better built 14" with the x1600..their W series) just depends on what gfx brand you want and what price.
i personally needed nVidia, as I only use linux, and ATI'd drivers for linux are terrible. (for windows i prefer ATI however)
