What's your take on these 3? i'd like to spend $1500, but if the more expensive one is really worth it (80% performance/ 20% aesthetic) which is the one to go with?

I'm really leaning towards the f3, and i hear good things about the a8, but really - is the G1 really worth the $400 premium?

What do you guys see as the real advantage for each? i want to use it for gaming, gps in my car, internet cafe stuff, casual browsing. I have a powerful PC (A64 3200+ @ 2.7ghz, 7800gt, 2GB ram etc...) and i'd like to have at least close to the same power on the notebok since that was a sweet PC last year.

    All input appreciated!

If you are looking solely at GPU performance to match your rig already then I would say the G1 would be your best bet to get that quality of graphic playback. The Go7700 still will not come close to your 7800GT. For portability I would say the smaller the better especially using GPS in your car. I myself am looking at the F3JP, but have been told by a few resellers that the F3 line hasn't been selling all too well, with some quirks associated with it.

    Hmm... what kind of quirks?

How's the vid card in the f3 stack up? I know tons about desktops... laptops not so much

The x1700 is one of the more decent GPU's that you will find in a notebook for a reasonable prices, but if you are a heavy gamer you may feel it to be inadequate. Have you checked out Chaz's GPU Info thread? It lists in performance and gives you more of an understanding how mobile GPU's stack up.

Here is a quote taken from another thread that I started with Geared2play.com answering... "It may have been overseas models or previous models of the f3 series, not sure if the latest model still has these issues, but it is a known inherent issue with the audio dj where the onboard speakers do not cut off. there have been a few reports of the onboard nic failing. obviosly minor issue which most people will not even notice. You dont hear about it on this forum too much becuase frankly f3 is a poorly selling model. go for the a8 or g1."

I'm thinking of making an excel spreadsheet with side by specs for all 3 machines since they seem to be highly recommended together in one form or another for the gamer who wants portability and an affordable price...

would that be helpful to anyone?

I was in the same boat a couple months ago, though for some reason I never brought the F3jp into the factor. I was only looking at the A8js and G1. What made me finally decide on the G1 was 1) the style, she really stands out 2) the high res screen looks amazing and 3) my old laptop was an HP 17" zd8000 and I felt the 14" screen of the A8js would be too small for me. Oh, plus it came with a very nice backpack and mouse. Is the G1 worth the extra money? To me it was, I am more a gamer at heart and 90% of the time, that is all she does. When not gaming, watching a movie. (plus I did not have to bother with adding an another gig of RAM).

Some people prefer the more conservative/business/incognito look of the A8js, and a big bonus to that is, you can mod it to look the way you want.

If I were more concerned about portability, ie; GPS in my car and internet cafe stuff, then I most likely would have gone with the A8js.

All 3 are very good laptops, you just have to weigh the pros and cons that match your taste and budget.

You have to remember that you're getting a few extras with the added price of the G1.

    - Extra 1GB RAM ($75)
    - Logitech MX518 ($40)

Also, the G1 has a 1.3MP webcam against the A8Js' 0.3MP, and it's made from stronger materials.

I think the G1 is a good buy, unless you really really must have an Expresscard slot.

Just fyi.. there are 2 main models of the G1 floating around, i found this in another thread which explains the $$ difference between proportable @ $1899 vs the $1799 i've seen

I'm surprised there's not more user input on a comparison between these 3... screen, build quality, longevity, etc...

Well, the difference between the two G1's is really that one is stocked by Best Buy, who don't want to give you any extras or honor Asus' 2-year global warranty. The other one is the standard Asus model that comes with the extras and the 2yr warranty.

I bought my G1 from ExcaliberPC last week after comparing prices. I looked at about 4 differnt vendors including proportable.com. I recieved it last week and it works great. It's an excellent machine. I'm not sure why all other vendors raised their price on the G1 a few weeks ago right before I ordered mine. I made sure before I ordered and I did get the G1-AK024C model which includes the 2 year warranty, lightscribe DVD drive, gaming mouse and backpack for $1795.00 I have never ordered from ExcaliberPC before but they were rated very high as a reseller. Anyway, I hope this helps. I read many of these posts before I bought the G1 and I am very happy with it so far. I've had 4 other laptops before and the screen on the G1 is absolutely amazing. Very sharp.

I ordered one from Geared2Play.com last week. I think there selling it for 1799.99. Communication was great, Eddie took care of everything even answered some after hours calls. They also have one of the highest resseller ratings.

I was considering the G1 mainly for the higher resolution screen, but when I found this F3jp with a WSXGA screen:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834220141

I was instantly sold on it. $1500 plus about $70 extra for an extra 1 gig of RAM and you've saved yourself about $350 by not purchasing the G1 which pretty much has identitical specs to that F3jp when you add one more gig of ram to it. I just received the notebook today and I love it. I may write a review on it.
