Well, I'm getting down to the final weeks before my purchase. I will either be getting the Z70A (soon), or the Z63A (in a couple of weeks). Both have integrated graphics (128 shared, I think) and are on the Sonoma platform.

I hear a lot about bottlenecks and don't want to waste money where it isn't needed. I will be using this for MBA school (Office, mostly). I was thinking of the following configuration:

    60 / 7200 HD (or 40, not sure yet)
    740 Pentium-M (1.73, 533FSB)
    2x512 DDR2-4200

Anyway, I would like to NOT exceed any of those, but am I going overboard? Is one of those options a major bottleneck, or way excessive? This is my first REAL notebook (meaning, not Dell, HP, etc) and would love any advice (good, preferably [ :D] ).

BTW - my wife might do some gaming on it - Heroes of Might and Magic III [ :D][ :D][ :D]

To clarify: Z70A is the M6 sonoma replacement. Z63A is the W3 barebones.

I would do the 1.86 processor. Other than that it looks good to me.

My only question is that there was a reported shortage of 60Gb 7200 hdd's, thus this could cause a problem if you wanna buy asap, if so I would consider a 80-100Gb 5200 drive, the performance of these is still quite good. The integrated graphics won't cause a bottle neck unless you want to do heavy 3D gaming, which it sounds like you won't.
512Mb is good, but this is the bare min I suggest anyone gets with XP SP2, as 256 of it is needed by XP alone, thus this would be the only area that might run short over time, but then you can always upgrade latter. In an ideal world I would say get 1X512 so that later an upgrade is easier.

I took it as meaning that Greg configured 1 gig ram with 2 sticks of 512. (2x512 = 1 Gig)

It looks good Greg, I would think that a bigger hardrive is always welcome (is like money.. you never have enough.. [:D])

    All - thanks.

Yes, I meant 1 gig total. ISTNC has a few 7200's left, so I think I'll be ok there. I have heard the 1.8 processor is the best value right now, so I might upgrade and drop the HD to a 40 / 7200. I won’t be allowed to work for the first year of school, so I’m trying to watch my $$$ now, while I can.

With the hard drive, though, I notice a lot of you get really large ones. My desktop has 120 gig, and I have used 15 gig[ :p] Anyway, I know the larger the drive, the denser it is, thus faster at retrieval. Is there another reason you all get such large drives (other than that)?

Well, depends on your storage needs, and in your case, your wife storage needs too (her games will use space too). [:D]

The more space you have the more appications you can have installed (more games) .. more MP'3 .. more pics.. Do you like to play around with pictures?? Any self respecting photo-hobbyst (sp??) will mainly work with TIFF file (lossless format).. and TIFF file (for pics) are large.. same as BMP files. I mean even for your business needs.. Isn't MS Office like 2 gigs itself??. You see with 1 gig of ram you are taking care of your future needs. With a 80 gigs of hardrive (that will be my minimum) you will be taking care of your future needs too.

If you only have used 15 gigs of your 120, my question would be How long have you had that computer? [;)]

Listen.. price difference between a 60GB(7200RPM) and a 80GB(5400RPM) is almost negligible. It is almost like when the girl at your burger joint asks "Do you want fries with that?"..[ :D] You might not want to eat all the fries ..but since the price difference of a burger and coke or a combo (with fries) is negligible then you go for the combo.

Hence, you should go for the combo. [ ;)]

My bad - used 30 gig now... (I'm now on the home computer). I built it 6 months ago. Geez, now I think 40 might not be enough... 80 just seems too big, however, I do want this notebook for the long haul.

Anyway, thanks all for confirming that my configuration will be ok and not unbalanced.

    LOL! I looked it up - the 80 / 5400 is actually $10 CHEAPER than the 60 / 7200!!!

Anyway, thanks Cyber6, they should be similar in speed, but I guess it is a no-brainer to get 20 more gig AND save $10. Glad you pointed that out.[ :D]

Yeah, I'd say stick with 1 stick of RAM... so that when/if you choose to upgrade, it's easier and/or cheaper.
Since you're doing office work, the 7200 drive isn't really necessary... so the 80gb 5400 RPM drive will work just fine.
I think a Pentium-M 740 will do fine... use the money you save to buy a nice bag or something pretty [ ;)]

Do you think I would need more than a gig of ram within 3 years? I was planning on 2 sticks (2x512), for dual-channel purposes, but that seems to be negligible anyway (the dual-channel benefits). One stick is definitely an option.

    Anyway, thanks everybody!
