Certain sites have the W3V listed with 2x256 of ram (zipzoomfly, istnc) and others have 1x512 (proportable, agear). I sent an email to istnc and they told me that the unconfigured w3v is 2x256 and hence you get the 3rd year warranty. So my question... are the sites advertising 1x512 configured then? and hence you cant get the 3rd year warranty with it??

I think istnc confused the w3 with the v6. I'm pretty sure all the W3's have 1 512MB module.

It's 512mb x 1...... our units are spec'd like that and I think everyone who has one can agree. Since only one shipment of W3's came to North America, they should all be the same.

    Thanks,

If a dealer copies the asus site directly without ever seing the unit then they will write it has 256mb. Asus site is wrong with the specs for north america. You can disregard them. By the way J the z80k supports native ddr400. Just noticed you carry them

Actually, with the latest bios update, i believe it does, you're right.... but Asus won't suggest it and performance increase haven't been benchmarked by anyone yet to prove it's giving us anything more. The latency on the ddr400 XMS is 2.5 where as the ddr333 is 2.0. Not a big deal. Did you benchmark the differences on the Z81k? I at least thought you didn't use the Z80k much.

There is a very noticeable difference. ABout 200mb/s between 333 and 400. Cas latency is almost not a factor. Your talking about 1-3% difference in bandwidth with lower cas in laptops. Thats why we dont even advertise cas. Besides that the centrino chipset has a predetermined cas from the experiments we conducted with laptops. To be quite honest paying an arm and a leg for a super dooper module is a worthless investment. It yields almost no increase in bandwidth. Z80k supported ddr400 and 2gb of ram from the getgo becuase we have been offering this almost from the getgo. Again i say this with a warning. Its a very picky chipset. So far in the last 3 month 2 of 4 different modules we stock didnt work preoperly. I try to steer people to the z71v. But there are still the occasional programmer and cad designer who know the benefit of the z80k.

You know what... I asked my one of my guys why they didn't like the ddr400 in the Z80k..... I got two answers.... 1, the people who wanted 400 wanted XMS and the XMS didn't boot in the system with the new bios...... but some generic stuff did and it was sort of hit and miss. Then they said, the same thing you did, there aren't too many people picking up that a64 system anymore either.

Ye it kinda slumped in sales after sonoma was released. It is a very pickky chipset but i had everything from infenion to micron to samsung boot in it. None are generic. It is a hit or miss for the buyer. I dont have nothing on the site that has not been tested.

On a side note. Whats up with the low stock quantity of the ensembles? Is it me or are they not selling as good as the whitebooks?

All about availability..... The initial run of all of the ensembles is small and Asus wants to get them out there and noticed before they start to bring in a ton. With something like the W3, they totally under estimated the demand. A small shipment came in the other day to Asus which is being split up and sent out to dealers...... but I think the BIG shipment is coming towards the end of next week....... then supply should be pretty good.
