Got my g50v-a2 through a few weeks ago now, and tried to connet to my dial up-net here at home (ugh, i know, lol). Anyway, took the rubber stopper outta the phone jack at the back, and plugged 'er in. It said it found the connection and i set up my password and everything, then when i clicked connect it pointed out that no modem was present. Darn. So now im wondering, is this normal (as in is there actually no dial-up modem), and what options or solutions do i have? I'm thinking there's probably and expresscard modem that would work, but what are prices for such and where can i get'em (n e where easy leik staples?). It seems this laptop has everything, except for a dialup modem and a deepfat frier. Haha. Anyway, thanks in advance by the way.

check your device manager to see if there is a modem and it's working. you may have to download drivers.

also make sure the telephony service is running (telephony.exe)

If it detected the phone line then I guess there is a modem. Otherwise the computer would have had no way of knowing the jack was plugged in. That is, unless I understand incorrectly how the modem connection works in a laptop.

So I guess it's a driver problem/bug, or else some required service is not running as said above. Sorry I can't help more than this...

Yes, it looks like 'to catch 22' situation.
You have to be on-line to to assist OS in driver installation - this the way it works in our days.
The only solution is old style manual driver installation.

Sorry, some of my details may be slightly errored, it was around the second day after getting my lappy that i tried to connect, so i cant quite remember the exact messages it gave me (or not). Apologies for that confusion, but sufficed to say, has anyone with a g50v (perhaps even the a2 specifically) tried connecting to dial -up yet? (and results thereof). And yeah, i forgot to ask if it might be a driver problem, because in the hardware manager there's no "modem" section, not even for broadband that i can see? I see if i can get a friend to download drivers, any hyperlinks you can provide for ease of searching+loading (soooooo slow of course) would be appreciated.

Check the specs, but if device manager shows no modems, then there usually isn't one, there are quite a few laptops coming out now without dial-up modems, the broadbands a bit puzzling though, the usb dial up units work as good if not better than internal ones from my experience anyway. Hardware that's connected or fitted internally to any computer, should be listed in device manager, are there any listings under unknown devices.

Notebook has both J11 for phone line and J45 for LAN
Omega, can you find someone with broadband (DSL or cable) to connect both cables in your notebook?

Edited: based on GenTech review G50V does not have J11 so dial-up is out of consideration. Or may be GenTech missed this connector? Look again whether you have 1 connector or 2 - bigger is J45 for LAN and J11 just little smaller for fax/dial-up

Sorry, abput the delayed reply, but anyway. Yup, it definately has both a Lan and a Telephone/fax jack. Both also have pins in too. But i was reading elsewhere on the forums:

    (Right at the bottom-)

...And found that apparantly the North American g50v's don't have modems. Now just to clear that statement up, does that mean it doesnt have a broadband modem either?! I understand maybe not having a dial up, but if it doesnt have a "lan modem" (technical term?) either, we as consumersshould be outraged. Mind you, ive already played a couple lan games successfully (whatever that means at this point), and it should also be noted that the laptop came with a phone cord. I've not really looked at it, but strange how it would considering it has no modem. (for a phone perhaps?). Well, please share any thoughts or solutions (ie. is it possible to put a modem in?) and thanks by the way for the help, i'm new to these forums, but ive been very impressed by the responsive community. :)

P.S. - can any one recommend, as a possible soln., any good external (usb?) dial-up modems such as brands+prices. Thanks again!

Thanks for the broadband modem definition Oldman. I was looking at those modems that you provided and checking online for some others too. From anyone's experience is it worth getting a $40+ modem or do $25 modems work just as well? And if you have found any notable modems, please do share.

Oh, and given that i did connect via LAN to another persons computer, does that mean that my Lan jack ought to be functional despite not finding it in the device manager?

Check your device manager again. Is it here now?
