I'm thinking about purchasing a G51 and am trying to decide between the two versions available on newegg and the one on xoticpc. They are all the same except for the CPU's. #1 (2.8ghz for $1,550), #2 (2.53ghz for $1,300) or #3 (Quad Core 2.0ghz for $1,470 after 100 rebate...also includes extra 320g HDD). The games I'll be playing the most will be Starcraft 2, Dragon Age:Origins, World in Conflict and other RTS and MMO games. Also, is the CPU easily upgradeable where I could thrown in a QX9300 should I come across one cheap enough in about a year?

IMO get the 2.53 GHz, it will be able to play any game just fine (+ you have the OC possiblity).
The CPU upgrade is easy, just a matter of removing a number of screws and a heatpipe. So u will be albe to upgrade to the QX9300 no problem if you will need more performance.

the 2.53GHz (the X1A which I have) is easily OC-able to 3GHz+. The heat it produces is alot lower compared to the others (even w/o undervolting and WITH overclocking, at least in my experience).

If I'm not mistaken the only G51 variant capable of running quads is the ones that already come with the qx9100(a1)?
    I could be wrong.......

The only thing I've heard is that the Best Buy version can't handle a Quad. All other authorized ASUS resellers should be fine.

the X1A and X2A are currently untested, and have a motherboard revision different from the A1 and RX05. Personally, I believe there is a high probability that the X1A and X2A are quad capable, mainly because the Asus support site only has two entries for the G51: the G51VX and the G51VX (Best Buy) which to me, says that is where the differences lay.

Maybe someone with a newegg variant can test it out? Post your findings!!

    hey everybody,

It was said a while ago, that the Rx-05 Variant can take the Quad Core CPU's as far as hardware, but AS for the software part it needs a Bios update to be useable or else your gonna end up with an unbootable OS. Asus may probably not ever release that as it will void your warranty, and they wont supporet that obviously Not everything supports quad cores yet anyways, it's really good if your going to be doing video editting, other than that the Current Core 2 Duo's Are great, 2.56GHZ and higher would be reccommended for the current and upcoming games, for some reason 2.00 GHZ just isn't enough for the new and upcoming games, i mean they run great, but it runs alot better and smoother at 2.56GHZ OC'ed of course, but if u can get another variant with the 2.5GHZ cpu already installed, that can be OC'ed to probably 3.0GHZ easy.

Said a while ago where? With the A1 BIOS (which supports quads) I was unable to use an OEM QX9300. Ken from GenTech tested the chip to see if I had gotten a defective, and it was in perfect working order.

On top of that, all the various G51s (RX05, A1, X1/2A) all have different motherboard revisions. I'm almost completely certain that we can write off quads in the RX05.

WOW......... While you chew on your foot, there's a thread in the sager forums about quads vs duals cores and it was shown that a quad core at 2..0 gave the same performance as a dual core oc'd to 3.0 if I remember correcltly the quad gave even better performance in multi-core optimized games WHICH most if not all future games now have.now I really hope someone with the newegg variants test to see if a quad will work as its something which would affect those of us that are looking at future purchases.
