    hi,

i was wondering if i always leave my charger in for my laptop,

or if i use a bit (90% remaining) and then keep recharging again..

does this drain the overall battery life? will this affect anything?

    thanks

Technically there's no memory effect on a lithum-ion battery....... however, it'll still probably freak you out.. some people try to drain their battery all the time, others as I've experienced don't even take their system off of ac power for 6 months or more...... I wouldn't worry about it and there really isn't a science to it... you're going to lose life regardless, over time.

Asus suggests their batteries have a 6 month shelf life...... which is why we try to keep about a 2-3 month supply of batteries on hand at any given time. After that, apparently they slowly lose their overall capacity.

Justin, you mentioned a 6 month shelf life. Do you think the Z63A main battery will still be available to purchase a year or 2 from now? I was about to buy one now to keep for the future, but the 6 mo. figure scares me...

New batteries are made for a while and obviously if a model like the W3 gets refreshed enough.. you can just buy one of the new ones for it. After 6 months, you're not going to get the full, original life out of the battery........ whether you use it or not. Using it is going to kill it faster than just saving it..... but there is no great way of storing batteries.....

You can always find places that sell batteries. Like my I9300 is pretty much out of date as of now because of the I9400 and E1705. These laptops have the same battery as my lappy, so I can still get batteries. Alot of companies do that so you won't be SOL when you need a new one. :)

I think I have to swear by the regular draining (or near-draining) of the battery approach. My Toshiba laptop is going on three years old, and it still gets a full 3.25 hours of battery life, like it did the day I bought it. It gets used on battery a minimum of 2-4 hours a day 3-5 days per week. i think most days it drains to about 30% before i plug it in.

from what I've read about li-ion batteries, they are kept healthy by small discharges followed by full recharging...running the battery down every time is not the healthiest, but regular conditioning is a good idea...

My only concern is that the Z63A/W3A has a very unique battery, most likely to never be replicated. :(

Do you see the W3A being around a year from now? Is the W3V's battery the same color? (or colour for the canadiens). :p

The W3V uses a silver coloured (thanks for taking into account us Canadians) batteries... whereas the W3A/Z63A is white. However, I'm sure the W3A batteries will still be available for a while...

So if you power your laptop using the AC with the battery still in, as opposed to taking the battery out and being on AC it makes no difference? Does having a full battery while on AC all the time harm the battery life?

.... the battery stops charging when it's full..... so it really has no affect.

Some people on a forum were saying it could potentially wear the battery faster. Guess it's not true!

    It makes no difference, really.
Just use it as you need to... there's no need to take any special precautions regarding the battery (except maybe to avoid extreme temperatures).
