Hey, I recently just purchased a G51vX-X3a and I'm loving it.

However, I need to find myself a cooler. I've overclocked the GPU a bit and the temps are going into the 95c+ range during crysis and I simply don't like that..

Does anyone have any reccomendations on coolers for this laptop? Somewhere in the range of 60$ and preferably from Newegg.com

    Thanks :)

Thanks for the quick response :)

That was the one I was considering, however, one of the reviews stated some issues with the placement of the fans/vents and how the cooling isn't completely ffective on the x3a, any insight on this?

That's probably the only thing holding me back from ordering that cooler.

I wouldn't buy that one. I have it and I was very disappointed. I don't know about a different one, and since I spent like $50ish or so for mine, I don't wanna turn around get another. What you should do is get a replacement back cover and cut out the fake fan grill on the back and then use this cooler under it. I ordered mine and several other users have done the same and noticed 10C drops in their temps.

mmm.. I found the review that you're talking about from the guy with the x3a. However there are many other reviewers there that have other G51's too who say that it works great for them. The specific model of the G51 doesn't really matter in this case since they're all built on the same chassis and use the same cooling method. The only difference in the G51j's and the vx's are the processor and other internal components.

I've heard many other users on the boards say that the NC2000 works great with their G51, so I wouldn't put a too much stock into one user out of many. I also found this from a review on Newegg of the x3a, which may help you out.

"- The GPU runs hot. However, I found that this was because it is not downclocking during normal web surfing and just basic use. The solution was to download the 186.82 drivers. No other drivers worked for me. It now runs about 10 celsius cooler!! During heavy gaming it will still get hot but the zalman nc2000 helps with that."

I don't see what he's talking about with the placement of the fans on the G51 not being right for this cooler either. The vents are toward the bottom of the G51 unit for the most part, which is optimal for the NC2000. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=34-220-639-Z02&ISList=34-220-639-Z01,34-220-639-Z02,34-220-639-Z03,34-220-639-Z04,34-220-639-Z05,34-220-639-Z06,34-220-639-Z07,34-220-639-Z08&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16834220639&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=ASUS%20G%20Series%20G51Vx-X3A%20Intel%20Core%202%20Duo%20P8700(2.53GHz)%2015.6%22%204GB%20Memory%20320GB%20HDD%20NVIDIA%20GeForce%20GTX%20260M%20NoteBook

    I hope that helps.

Using Dox's drivers( Which, interestingly enough, improved performance and dropped temps)

But I'll go ahead and order the Zalman, as I can always return it for a refund later.

But if anyone has any other input, feel free :).

    Thanks for the help.

Making a custom cooler with some cheap 12v fans and an AC adapter, will blow any other cooler on the market out of the water, for a few reasons.

    1. most of the time, cheaper
    2. you can direct airflow straight to the important vents (GPU)
    3. you can get MUCH MUCH MUCH more powerful fans, for a cheaper/equivalent price.

^ very true. Plus when the fan dies in the notebook cooler instead of forking over another $50 you can just buy another one for $10 in your DIY cooler.
