So... I think I was another victim of the 8600m GT overheating defect. I should be getting my G1S back from my RMA on Monday or Tuesday.

I'm not sure how they fixed it, and I don't want to have this problem again. Can anyone suggest ways to cool my laptop that A- won't void the warranty and B- I can carry with me back and forth to school?

All of the portable notebook coolers I've seen pull air away from the laptop, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. The larger ones that actually blow air where it's needed aren't exactly college commuter friendly.

I've seen pics online of machines with Aluminum back plates to facilitate thermal conduction. Is this a good idea?

I still have 2 years of warranty coverage left, and I don't want to lose that... but at the same time, I really don't want this beast to overheat again.

    Suggestions?

Many G1S notebooks have experienced overheating due to the GPU. I have heard (not confirmed) that if you send your unit in for repairs, Asus will replace the 8600M GT with a 9500M GS. Performance wise, the 9500 is just a tad slower, but runs much much cooler.

A cooler that works really well with the G1S but not exactly portable is the Notepal infinite. My friend owned both and they worked very nicely together.

How would I go about checking this when I get my computer back on Monday/Tuesday?

You mean what GPU you have? Just check the Hardware Manager, it'll tell you what GPU you have. If your using Vista, it should also tell you on the welcome screen I think (maybe).
