I'm trying to find a cooling pad for my W3J... I generally don't game or do anything strenuous on my laptop however it seldom falls below 60 degress C and often hits 70 degrees C.

The rooms I'm in are generally fairly warm...between 70-76

Targus Chillpad. Works fine, perfect size for W3J, very cheap to get. It's plastic, not aluminum though. Then again, the fans draw heat away from the bottom of your laptop---which is elevated from the surface of the Chillpad by rubber stubs---and blow it out the back, so aluminum wouldn't really help there.

Wow, another thread about how the W3J overheats, some people on here are telling me that it just dosen't overheat, and that it's one of the coolest running asus laptops out there, but if that's so, than why are there so many threads of this nature?

I don't think I'm going to buy a W3J anyore, you shouldn't have to buy a cooling pad for a laptop with a cpu and gpu as slow as the W3J when the A8Js seems to run perfectly fine with higer specs.

I guess some of the people on here that are sellers are willing to try and convince people of anything

Few days ago I checked 8 cooling pads with my W3j and absolute winner is Zalman ZM-NC1000 but it's quite expensive. If you want more budget option go for Vantec LapCool 3 - also very good cooling solution but built quality is poor.

There's a difference between "heating" and "overheating" .. and keep in mind, this topic is very subjective. Overheating usually causes a system to lock up or reboot. I never had my system lock up on me .. Even when doing some heavy gaming for 2+ hrs. Sure the laptop gets "warm" at some spots, but not to a point to cause a total system failure.

IMO, the only spots on the notebook that get "warmer than usual" are the following: top-right wristpad, exhaust fan, and bottom-middle LCD (ASUS Logo). The rest of the laptop is actually quite cool.

Again, this is my opinion. One thing I can tell you though, my system never failed due to overheating. So if someone asks me, "Does your W3J overheat ?", I say "No".

    Cheers.

W3J is in general a warm laptop, ASUS wouldn't give us an overheating laptop that is unstable, nor would any brand. The W3J is so powerfull in a small package, thus making it a tad warmer, than other laptops.

There are a few way to overheat any laptop which would cause it to crash/reboot, blocking the vent, not cleaning the vents, you should do that every 1-6 months. And lastly an immense amount of overclocking is potentially fatal...please don't do what i've said above.

People like laptop coolers because for the most part it keeps a laptop cooler, to suit their subjective needs. Everyone has their own tolerance for heat, I particularly have a high tolerance for heat on laptops, so i don't mind a warm laptop to begin with.

Viveck, if not the USB port, what other solution would you like? AC adapter? Do you plan on using the cooler only at your desk? Then I would suggest one that is powered by an AC Adapter, or even batteries.

60-70 C is well within the temperature range of mobile CPUs and GPUs these days so it isn't "overheating".

Obviously your prerogative what you buy.

I think the OP is just being overly cautious more then anything. I also have a suspicion they are running in full-clockspeed mode as opposed to dynamic switching, hence the constantly high temps.

Not here, you have to go to the Alienware forum for that.

Yes I'm going to be using at my desk as the times I really use it for prolonged periods, or even for gaming I'm at my desk.

I've never messed with clock speeds; however I'm generally situated in a fairly warm room.

I'm looking for a cooling pad for my A8J. What is a quality cooling pad that has a built-in USB hub? It'd be handy because I can just place my laptop onto the cooling pad and plug in one plug rather than 4 or 5.

The Vantec LapCool 2 looks like the best bet. Any alternatives?

Yan, do you want it to be Powered by USB or powered by AC adapter?

I suggest go with ones with powered by AC adapters since they offer more features.

    Have a look at:
VANTEC LapCool4 Notebook Cooler Model LPC-430
VANTEC LapCool4 Notebook Cooler Model LPC-420
EVERCOOL Aluminum Notebook Cooling Pad Model EC-NP-301

I think I'll get the LapCool4 without the card reader, as I already have that on my printer. Do you sell it at your Markham location? I'll be home in Toronto over the holidays.

I'm thinking of getting a LapCool 4 w/card reader for my Z33 in a few months. I plan to get a new monitor for my desktop and make a docking station type work area for the Z33 with the old monitor. Not that it runs hot at all, more for the support, the USB ports, and the card reader.

Dude you've obviously never gotten an old school Compaq (Presario), or Alienware.

    AceOfSpades:

Definitely go with the W3J. The notebook is hot because it has a kickass GPU but never hot enough to be a problem. Mine idles at 53 C (undervolted) and tops at 73 C. That's already much better than the Macbooks, which run in the 80s and they don't even have a dedicated GPU!

My take is if you get a W3J, you're probably doing it for the GPU and anyone looking to game on their notebook should understand the heat trade-offs involved.
