I apologise if this question has been asked before, but is there an ETA on the N. American release of the V1J?
-
No, it is also unclear what version of it will arrive, if any.
It's a bit frustrating to be honest, I was ready to jump ship and go out and buy the LG S1 in here (Israel), but I've just been told they are not bringing the Merom model over.
So I'm back on board, kind of. -
It is so frustrating not knowing whether the immensely popular V1J will even reach the North American market. Ughh! I'm so eager to just pounce on and buy it!
All this delay has made me looking around equally powerful and pretty laptops, like the HP NC8430. But V1J is still number one, if it ever comes out -
I've been through Sony, IBM, LG and more, only to come back every time to Asus, I just wish they'd hurry up and show signs of life.

neenah, thanks for the further comparison between the 2.
"Non-match:
No DVI interface with V6J,"
I might have overlooked this but hopefully won't really need that as its mostly for connecting to a monitor which we prob won't need or want to do.
"non-wide 15" screen with V6J (wide screen 15.4" with V1J), 1400 x 1050 with V6J (1680 x 1050 with V1J)"
I knew this but didn't realize the res was different though I imagine that since it is just the one half of res its because of the widescreen and interesting point you made that on highest its too small while on one lower its blurry etc that the v6j is fine on. we wanted it to be semi portable so we can take it with us and why we decided not to go with 17'' screen as it would be too bulky when we do take somewhere, it will mostly be used around house, also in living room where digital hdtv is and all so didn't really need multimedia either so much (like you said) but still wanted 15'' screen. the wide is nice but does make it look smaller and I wonder that even the 15.4'' wide screen of the v1j might seem smaller then 15.1'' square screen of v6j. I like wide (all my tvs are) but heard you don't miss it and that square gives it more height and feels like more room. the v6j having the 15.1 but being thin and light and supposedly just as portable as some smaller laptops gives you best of both worlds but I guess the v1j does too.
,"nVidia 7400 on V6J (ATI 1600 on V1J),"
sounded like you are not familiar with the v6j vid card but supposedly it is not good for gaming while he ati 1600 is one of the better for gaming. I did know this but figured I am not going to play pc games at all really on the laptop as I have a pc for that and don't really even have/make much time to play console vid games (just my psp and nin DS sometimes) but still it would be nice to have the better vid card.
"Ultra DMA hard disk on V6J (SATA on V1J),"
what is the difference? I'm assuming that the sata being on the newer v1j is somehow better.
"4x USB on V6J (3x on V1J),"
this is one nice minor slight advantage of the v6j though I guess they figured with docking station you don't need it plus can use usb hub.
" no docking port on V6J,"
speaking of docking port. yes I knew of this but wasn't too concerned as we don't need a desktop replacement and it won't even be used on a desk or table much anyway, just mostly sofa etc.
" no swappability on V6J."
does this refer to a swappable optical drive where you can put a second battery or second hd? if so yeah the w3j has that. seems like a nice feature but wasn't a major concern for me.
I hope it was a good choice to get the v6j with yonah and for the most part I think it is and was a good price. at the time it was not mentioned or slated for a merom update but now has been mentioned that it will happen and though no date yet it is expected in end of nov./dec.
I just didn't want to wait because at that point there may be something else out or coming to wait for. I'm fine with yonah as I have realized I won't need 64bit merom for some time. I wanted to get v6j now and then just upgrade it later and/or get a new laptop with merom when it would be more made use of with vista and 64 bit progs/apps which may be a couple years before there is really enough of those.
I may not be able to wait that long even as in looking at the release dates for stock merom release asus laptops for the US which there is a thread about and I suggest some from NA here checking to maybe find an alternative to v1j as its not on the list or mentioned which means its at least not until dec. at the earliest but prob not then if ever as again no word on any plan of bringing it to the us.
none of the ones coming am I too interested in and not worth waiting till end of nov./dec. for merom v6j which doesn't even have a def date for the US but tht is promising if german website shows it.
coming mid nov. though is the w2p which is exciting as its a top of the line loaded 17'' model. this might be great model for me to check out having a lot that the v6j doesn't with better vid card and hddvd. I know the 17 is bulky but I love nice large screen and wuxga (better then wsxga even) sounds amazing. it wouldn't be much of a portable maybe but would be an alternative to upgrading my desktop pc for gaming.
hddvd I know is competing with bluray but right now hddvd is better and I think so far I prefer. I was going to get a toshiba hddvd player anyway possibly when I get a new 1080p tv so having laptop with hddvd that can also do more would be even better.
its just on the thread with release date of W2p for the US it doesn't specify the specs and some worried it might not be all exact what the uk site says their W2P will have but I'm thinking it should.
I still want to discuss and entertain the idea of importing a v1j but it sounds like it is an extra expense and some compatibility concerns that just make it a little more trouble then its worth and worrisome. even so it may just be the power cord which could be easily remedied which in one way it sounds like it is but then sounds like there is a concern voltage could be diff.
so if I can have domestic release yonah v6j, and later let wife mostly use that as her own when I get a merom w2p that could be the best of both worlds and eliminate the need/want to import a v1j.(yonah v6j & merom w2p has got to be better then just merom v1j alone, heh)
I'm just worried the price is going to go down on the yonah v6j but maybe not and I was going to look for the 1.66ghz version if it was cheaper but it really wasn't once rebate expired and got price for the 2ghz v6j that should hold up for some time as I hear price stays mostly same. but then merom version is alsosupposed to be same retail price making it no reason not to get the merom version even if it isn't made use of.(though most likely no discounted price like I found for yonah v6j as new merom version will be full $1900 retail or more) but with technology you can always wait for cheaper on current but then newer and better comes out. just have to get what you want when you do and not regret instead of just keep on waiting.
also asus are supposedly upping the warranty back up to 2yr and including carrying bag like they used to do, but this will increase the price. so youdbe paying more over yonah version for those reasons not that its merom.
W1j sounds decent but never came out in NA and isn't going to and though the multimedia aspects sound good and I didn't realize it had hddvd? if going to import, mine as well get v1j though I would be interested to see comparison between w1j and v1j.
I think it was smarter thing to do to get v6j instead of importing v1j but if uk prices are better and have english website to order from that may be good otherwise .nl site and if can just come up with a good power supply solutution with no worry of diff voltage and whatever else then maybe for a second one I could still consider importing v1j a option..
so being I didn want to wait anymore yonah v6j is fine for first one and now can consider a possible second for just me (instead of share with wife which she already admitted she is going to use it the most) she is going to want to connect to her work network and do work from homein thenear future. she can have v6j at that point and I will have my own for work and play maybe.
so right now prob between importing v1j or waiting till nov./dec for US release of W2p and prob leaning towards the latter as its an upgrade to the v6j in every way and will be a worry free NA release. bu won't be that portable at 17'' unless somehow they make it light and thin. so maybe still consider the w1j for hddvd? multimedia and more portable 15.4'' widescreen.
again I'm happy with our v6j choice, its just tough when you see nice looking 15.4'' wide sony in a chain store circular with black screen and light whitish keyboard with good specs and c2d for like $1300 and we're paying $1727 for asus. (of course tax would be a lot on that making it almost as much while no tax and domestic shipping is nothing) It didn't state the sony model but looked nice. (could always get the sony model online to save tax and just pay shipping) but is asus really even more expensive then coparable sony? it was t5600 c2d that is 2mb cache. I know 4mb cache starts with the t7xxx. was going to just go t7200 2ghz but may go t7400 so its slight ghz upgrade to the t2500 on top of being core 2. whether just if I upgrade the v6j or just get another laptop with merom.
W2p might be perfect, though expensive and only have to wat till nov./dec. which may almost be too soon since I'm just getting v6j now. but again will be sharing with wife for now, so each having our own (if I get a second laptop) will be better. -
The 4 USBs on the V6 are all cramped on one side(The right side, its more of a negative thing, since its so cramped and messy there(mic and sound output also there), as well as the vent, so warm air usually hits the wiring alot), and hard to organize, especially if you are a right handed mouse user. But because of the hinge, there had to be sacrifices....
Oh well... -
yeah no front inputs either on v6j like the sony has. and i coulda used a **** ps2 port for this keyboard i have as i dont have a ps2 to usb adapter.

i came to taiwan fully expecting to see brand new asus models that i've never seen in Canada. Sadly, it seems all of the newer models are shipped off to Europe/North America T_T darn economists.
The W1J's available here are still using x700 vid cards and not even Core Duo :< and the V1J was unheard of. The only asus notebooks with C2D stock atm on the market here is the A8J and A6 models. On the bright side, I'm able to get a W3J + customize with 2g 667 ram + Merom T7400 for well under $2000 Canadian.
You'd normally think that with Asus being in Taiwan, you'd get to see some of the newer stuff but T_T. Maybe i've been checking the wrong stores, better look around some more.
Coriolis: you've got the cutest Utawarerumono avatar ever -
For ppl visiting Singapore, the V1J is available here, but with a pretty crappy WXGA screen, and without ZBD policy, since it only applies to WXGA+ above. Such a pity.... But as I needed a laptop, I bought it anyway. The Acer 8215 screen just looks too dim.
The heat on the right side is quite disturbing, and this is while installing XP....
