    Hello there.

I hope this thread doesn’t deter anyone because of its length. I’m including as much detail as possible because I’m almost at the point of hopelessness here and if someone can remedy my problem, I’ll most likely name my firstborn after them I’ll be so happy.

So about a week ago I bought Crysis and installed it (with great excitement, I should add).

The first thing I noticed which was kind of weird was that the game didn't ask me if I wanted a shortcut anywhere and there weren't any shortcuts on either my desktop or start menu when the install finished. Also, I tried to use the autorun function off the DVD and none of the options (play, help, quit) worked. I could click on the options but nothing would happen, and eventually I had to go into task manager to get rid of the autorun screen.

After that, I went into the Bin32 folder, found the exec file and launched the game. Unfortunately, all I got was a spinning disc (which I thought signalled that the game was about to start) followed by a full screen black screen with no other activity. After waiting several minutes with no change, and all I could do was hit ctrl+alt+delete to get to task manager and from there I ended it. I rebooted and retried a few times, but the same thing happened each time – the dreaded black screen of nothingness.

Stranger still, the next day I just randomly attempted to run the game, and it worked! I clicked on "Play" in the autorun window and the game launched, and it was awesome! The game ran very well and 2 hours later I quit it properly and looked forward to playing it the next day.

Unfortunately, when I tried to launch it the next day, I ran into my previous problem, except instead of a fullscreen black screen I was greeted with a black screen in a smaller window, and at top left corner of this window it said something like: "Crysis. Oct 22 - 2007 - 22:07:34" or something very similar, with some random October date and time displayed and nothing more. If I clicked inside the window it added "Not Responding" in brackets. Again, the only way to get rid of it was to end it with task manager. This is where I am with my problem currently.

So, at the good advice of an acquaintance, I defragged my hard drive, installed all the latest drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled the game but still got the same results: small window, October date + time, Not Responding in brackets, must exit with task manager.

I hope I included all critical information, and if you’ve made it this far I thank you!

I'm terribly confused and quite frustrated because I'm not the most tech-savvy individual, and I've tried a lot of things via forums and friends, and yet I still have no idea what's wrong. The most frustrating thing is that IT DID WORK! And when it did it was glorious!

So what happened? What could be wrong? Is anyone else having this problem? Could it be a driver issue? I upgraded to 169.09 but then got the latest VGA offering from the Asus website, which I believe to be 101.34 according to the autodetect thingy at NVIDIA’s website.

Any help would be greatly, greatly, GREATLY appreciated!!!

Given that you updated your graphics card driver, i suspect a faulty DVD or a faulty DVD drive. Try to run the game on a different computer and see if it works.

so you say you upgraded to 169.09 and went back down to a lower driver?

    *scratches head*

You tried the 169.09 driver with crysis or was it also no luck? Did you install with admin privileges? Is UAC disabled?

the fact that it ran one good time really hurts the troubleshooting process, unless you did something different after words

Thanks so much to all who replied!

yusky03: Thanks for the link. I’m gonna look into it. Is it bad though, to try different drivers? Can I mess up my system?

CenA: Unfortunately, I don't have another computer that I could test the game on. Also, my DVD player appears to work with movies and other games (like Battlefield 2) so I can't tell if it's the DVD drive. Is there a way to know?

Gobmonster: I went back to a lower driver because it was from Asus' site, as opposed to laptopvideo2go (where I got 169.09) because according to the NVIDIA site and this guy I know who knows computers pretty well, I should only download drivers directly from Asus. However at this point I think I'll reinstall 169.09 again because I agree that it doesn't really appear to make sense becaus when Crysis DID work for that short period it was with the 169.09 driver. As for installing it with Admin privileges and disabling UAC, unfortunately I can't provide any answers because I don't know (I have no clue what UAC means).

Now, the only thing I’ll mention is that the only difference between the time the game ran and the time I tried to run it again and it didn't work was that I powered my system down for the night and then started it up fresh the next morning. But I wouldn't think that would cause it not to work again.

Well, time to experiment. Thanks again for the help.

    Holy shamoly.

So, today I went to my local computer store to buy some Ethernet cable. I also decided to bring my notebook with the Crysis disc to see if maybe he could help. So I ran Crysis, it did the thing it does where I get a black window showing a random October date, and then closed the non-responsive program with task manager.

Then the guy went into the Crysis folder, went into the Bin32 folder, and right-clicked. He then went into properties, and changed the 'compatibility' setting to Windows XP SP2. He told me he did this because most games aren't yet truly compatible with Vista. Then he double-clicked the Crysis exec file, and HALLELUJAH, it launched in a small window. That's right, the game launched. I then hit Alt+Enter to make it fullscreen, and he played it for a bit before I thanked him a billion times and left.

I didn't turn off the notebook. Instead, I just closed the lid. I mention this because with regard to my previous post, I don't want to leave any details out.

I got home and eargerly readied myself to play the game. But, of course, because why should anything be easier or logical or rational, the game wouldn't start YET AGAIN. Instead, when I tried to launch it, the screen went full screen and all black again, and nothing happened. I had to ctrl+alt+del and use task manager to kill it.

So that's where I am now... again.

I'm honestly just about ready to give up on PC games and Microsoft entirely and start building model cars or something. Hell, even those enormous 3-D puzzles would be less stressful than this.

Anyhow, if you've encountered anything like this or can offer any help, it'd be supremely appreciated forever and ever.

    Thanks in advance.

On my c90, crysis can take a good 5 min to start up from the black screen.

As long as you hear the hd working, its loading the game. It does take an extremely long time, esp on a notebook hd.
