    hay doodz,

as far as i know the g50vt is based on the montevina platform. so why is it using ddr2 800mhz only? can i use ddr3 as well? or is it impossible due to different pin-numbers?

and another question: if i buy a g50vt with only 1 HD can i easily plug another one? or do i need sort of adapter or such sh1t? can i configure RAID with 2 discs?

    thx :)

According to Vicious, it doesnt support DDR3 ram :(

I don't think you'll need another adapter, but you'll probabbly need the shell to hold to hardrive :D and yes you can configure raid, but express wouldn't work if you set them up on raid

Yeah I just shoved the new hard drive in the bay and made sure not to jar the laptop too hard.

Dunno about lighter, but probably quieter for sure.

the real reason it cant fit is you have to look at pics of DDR2 and DDR3 the ram is completely different DDR3 look shorter in length but no it will not work.

On a similar note can you install 8gb of memory in this model? I have the G50vt-X1 and the spec sheet from bestbuy says only 4gb max. However Everest says 8gb max.

Hmm. I think using the current processors the Montevina chipset is capable of running 8GB of RAM. But, I think only at 667 MHz.

And to once agan answer the original question, you can't install DDR3 RAM in the G50V or G50Vt.

I'm pretty sure you can run 8GB of ram @ 800MHz, the reason that people are running 667s right now is because they're much cheaper then the 800s. I read in another thread which stated the price being half as much, will link later.

    Edit: Link

As far as i can tell there doesn't seem to be any 4Gb 800Mhz DDR2 SO-DIMM modules available. I can only find those G-Skill 667Mhz modules. If anyone knows of any 800Mhz DDR2 modules in 4Gb sizes, please let me know.

Thankyou for the links, Indeed the G-Skill 4gb 667Mhz are actually quite decently priced here, but yeah 2x4GB 800Mhz Kingstons will set me back the same price as a new HPDV5 with 4Gb. (LOL)...

But thanks at least i can track those model numbers for an eventual cheaper price. The Kingstons are also kind of slow with CL6. I hope G-Skill release some cheaper 800Mhz modules soon too..

Just wait for a couple months and I bet the 4GB modules will be much more affordable, although this laptop runs quite nicely with only(hah...remembering the 96k days) 4gigs of ram. Windows 7 absolutely flies and Vista runs the best I have ever seen it.

3GB is achieved by 1x1GB + 1x2GB modules. Individual RAM modules are sized according to powers of 2 (1GB, 2GB, 4GB).

I'm using G50vt-x1 with MS Windows 7 build 7600 x64, and Everest says that this laptop support DDR2, DDR3 ram and expandable to 8GB, is that right? Any idea ?

Same. The G71 supports 12GB of RAM with four slots, if I remember correctly. Can't get up to 4GB of RAM if they didn't make 3GB sticks.

ok lets end this. the chipset supports ddr3 and ddr2. They will not take ddr3 ram. they do not have ddr3 memory slots. they have ddr2.

Yep, DDR2 and DDR3 are not cross-compatible due to their physical differences. DDR2 will not fit into a DDR3 slot and DDR3 will not fit into a DDR2 slot.
