I'm trying to play DVDs and video downloaded from the Internet with no success. I keep getting a message that no DVD decoder is installed. Doesn't this computer come with a decoder? I want to view videos and DVDs. Is it something that needs to be installed? Surely I don't have to go out and purchase one.

    it doesn't come preinstalled.

pop in that "ASUSDVD" cd that came with your laptop.

Ditto.... the software decoder would be the AsusDVD package.

Thank you for the replies. I installed the software on the disc but still cannot see video, however I could finally play a movie from the Interactual player that came with the computer. However I would like to simply click on a link on a web site and have it play through the windows media viewer. When I open a file through the Windows media player I get sound but no video any ideas?

Also, what is the maximum resolution I can output to an external monitor?

.... yeah actually you need to know how to set it up first.... my guess is you screwed something else up along the way.... asus dvd is the dvd decoder........... interactual stinks... but if it's playing video - you had to have done something wrong because it's obviously not the hardware.

if you're outputting to a tv....... max tv res is usually 800x600....... but you can output over WQXGA I believe if you have a monitor that could support it.

To play back DVDs or pretty much any video file, use VLC it's quite simply the best program for the job, and it's completely free!
