Anyone have trouble with DVD burning and reading certain media on this drive? Most of my DVD's have been burnt on Memorex 8X +R media on my desktop. They work fine in my 4 year old standalone DVD player. The W3V drive can only read a few of them and usually with some trouble. Additonally, I have not been able to burn a successfull DVD yet. I tried the same Memorex media. Usually it doesn't even recognize it, but when it does the burn completes ok and then is unreadable in the W3V and my DVD player and desktop have trouble with it. I bought some new media (8X +R Philips) and these are recognized and burn fine, but are then unreadable. I know these are not the best media and I should try others, but tis does not seem right. Do I have a bad drive?

First of all, I don't think any stand along dvd player will read a +R burnt disc.... only -R .... That's not a solution to your problem, but don't try to copy a dvd for use in your home dvd player with a +R disc.

    What software are you using?

Discs are important..... some just aren't good. The problem is, none of the companies who sell the media actually make it and there are only a handful of companies who make blanks, so all of the brands you might be trying could actually be the same identical disc. I'm not sure what's "best" for the W3..... but it's a toshibia drive and the same drive used in the Z7 series, W3 series (including obviously the z63a) .... If the drive is burning them and the software is saying there wasn't a problem... something else may be wrong. But for the system to burn it then not be able to read it is weird... it's either your software, or I don't know... maybe a drive issue but if it were there would most likely be a problem with all dvd functionality of the drive....

    Thanks,
    Justin

Regarding the +R/-R issue, +R discs work fine in most set top DVD players including my own. As I mentioned, all my DVD's are +R and play fine including in family members DVD players. I'm using the latest version of Nero. I was just able to burn some data to a fujitsu 4x +RW disc so this may be a media issue. It just seems odd that my 4 year old set top DVD player can read my DVD's (8X +R Memorex) and the W3V drive cannot read them at all. Maybe some drives are just very picky. I will try some other media in the meantime.

I burn my dvd's with +r media only and all my stand alone dvd players have no problem playing them.

I know one thing about though, my Asus external dvd drive for my S5N has problems reading burnt dvds, whether it be movies or data on dvd. (All using +r)

I contacted Asus support and they just told me the drive will just not read certain dvd medias.

Pro.. the +R format is actually more compatible in DVD players and DVD drives than -R.

As for brand wise, first go with Fuji, they are mfg. in Japan, second go with Verbatim. It's the dye used on the disc which makes the difference, not the actual disc itself.

Is it +r? Huummmm... I know that now the newest players will play almost anything, but I remember last year or a little earlier, the reason -R and RW drives came out before dual format +/- ... or just + was becaus they were more compatible with stand alone players.

Either way, I guess it's not an issue anymore as you're not buying one drive or the other anymore.... but one spindle over the other I guess.....

    Thanks,

I had similar issues with the drive on my M6Ne...I gave up making toasters and got an external buner instead. If you find out who makes the drive (mine was a toshiba) then you might be able to a)get a firmwear update to improve disk compatablility, or b)find other users who have had success with brand 'X' media.
Good luck I feel your pain
