    Hello,

I've had my Asus N61J notebook for over a year now with no big issues to speak of. Very suddenly, however, it won't recognize movie DVD's anymore. It's very particular - it recognizes game DVD's, but not movie ones. In fact, I know for certain that I've played these movies on my computer before, but as of a few weeks ago, I cannot. When I insert the disk, it just clicks and clicks away, without recognizing anything. I tried auto-updating the drivers through 'Control Panel', but they seem to be up to date. My player specs are 'NKV T6JGT6ZK SCSI CdRom device' and 'TSSTcorp CDDVDW T6-L633C', whatever that means... Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks,

IT might come as bad news - You DVD drive is perhaps failing now. Same happned with me about an year ago. I had toshiba laptop and it would read only certain DVD+R discs. If you would insert any other type or even some other branded DVD+R dic, it would keep on reading it but not show anything .I had to buy a new DVD writer. You can still look around for a fix but i dont think there is any.
And to support my opinion: I went to numerous computer repair shops in my area and I didnt tell them that i have visited some other repair guy. And they all would say the same thing without even touching the drive. This has happned in two of my other laptops.

I've also noticed a lot of optical drives gradually "failing" over time.

Then I used one of those DVD drive cleaners (disks with brushes on them) to get the dust buildup off the lens, and surprise, they worked perfectly fine again! Never hurts to try ;)

Oh man, I hope it doesn't mean my drive is failing! *sigh* Oh well, at least I use digital copies of things more than hard copies anyway. Thanks for the help and suggestions!

Optical drives are pretty inexpensive these days, and they are super easy to replace....so don't worry, it's not hugely disastrous if it's failing.

yeah. Optical drives usually last for year or so. dont expect anymore out of them. if they do work longer then that, be happy ;)
