I don’t know if anyone else notices this on their specific notebook but here it is. When playing DVD movies, I’ve noticed that when a scene is panning, there is major stutter. It's only noticeable when the camera is panning a room or outside scene, which is annoying. Recently, I asked if the HDD light should be flickering when playing DVD movies. Most responses came back as that being normal. Is there an area that is being cached as to why the HDD is active? Seems that this occurs with every DVD software player (WinDVD-Windows Media player- AsusDVD). It would be interesting to know if others are experiencing this phenomenon on their notebooks. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S, I shutdown my background programs when watching movies. My hijackthis log is clean as a whistle. My HDD is not fragmented. I have no spyware or Trojans. CPU temp is about 47-50c* and HDD is a steady 32c*. This occurs when either plugged in or on battery.

DMA stands for Direct Memory Access. It is really just a way for data to transfer faster between the device (DVD-ROM) and memory, independent of the CPU.

    Here's a dumb analogy:
    Without DMA
You (the DVD-ROM) want to go to the bar (memory)
but in order to go you need to ask your wife(CPU)

    With DMA
You(the DVD-ROM) want to go to the bar (memory)
so you get up and leave without asking your wife.

Sorry for the sexist example. I'm male and can't really think of anything similiar to females without putting my foot deeper down my throat.

Since you have tried those programs, I personaly use VLC, it basicaly plays everything.

Furthermore, your trying to play a DVD, and you place it into your ROM, and it starts stuttering while it plays the movie

Does this occur when your using the ROM for gaming?

Also, try playing the movie or any movie from your hard drive, and use any program you wish, including VLC and what happens?

How do I go about locating this?

P.S, Nevermind, I located it...Both primary and secondary IDE's are in DMA mode if Available.

it's definitely not the CPU underclocked.
An 800mhz comp can play DVD's back fine.
for a core duo, even clocking it way down would still be fine

Have you updated your graphics driver. i'm not sure if this makes a difference, but this sort of thing happened to my desktop, and i installed the most recent driver update, and it was okay after that.

My current Driver is in my sig (6571). Is there an updated driver for the X700?

I was thinking the Underclocking was the problem as well, so I shutdown NHC, and it was still doing it. DVD movies should not be that difficult on the CPU. I had an old PII 400mhz laptop that played DVD'd flawlessly.

It does it in every movie! When a scene is panning, it's very noticable. I hardly have anything on this machine. The HDD light is brightly flashing. Why does the HDD need to be active when watching DVD movies????

I even have windows set in classic mode, with all the fansy XP crap animation shut off under the performance tab.

for the life of me, I can't figure it out. Are these CD/RW/DVD-RW drives stable enough to watch DVD movies?

Have you tried to hook youy laptop to an external CRT monitor. I'm thinking this, because it may be the LCD that is causing these paning shot problems. Reaction times of these are inherently slow, and slower still on a laptop display.

I will try this, but Im not holding my breathe Zero!!

Milestone:: I don't play games on my notebook. Im unsure how to get a movie to play from the HDD only. Can You Suggest a program to experiment with (freeware/shareware).

Just thinking here...will spywareblaster (hidden background program) effect DVD playback? I will try shutting this down via the Task manger and see if this has any effect.

Obviously something is effecting my DVD playback and not giving me the 30 FPS our eyes are used to for silky frames.

this will be interesting to know what the cause is. Im somewhat computer savy, so any suggestions are welcome. I will kick myself if it turns out to be something simple.
