I know theres a thread for this but I couldnt find it when i searched for it. Will DVI make a big difference on 19in wide? If so... my notebook doesnt have DVI so is there a port replicator or something?

from what I have read/been told, unless you have keen eyes/have deep interest in these aspects, normal people would not be able to tell the difference between VGA/DVI. If your notebook doesn't have a DVI and the monitor doesn't have a VGA connector you can get a DVI to VGA connector.

it does make a difference. but the analog electronics in monitors have gotten so good that its only noticeable at like 21in and over. before it was a night and day difference.

I will agree with Steve in that my suggestion for VGA / DVI is basically like this:

19" regular ratio or bigger - can benefit from DVI
21" widescreen or bigger - can benefit from DVI

A 19" widescreen really won't..... even with a keen eye, the difference today even on slightly larger screens is almost nothing..... I've tested many devices on both my 23" widescreen Sony and my 20" widescreen Asus desktop monitors and even the difference in the 23" is almost unnoticable and I know what I'm looking for. I'd say DVI is really only *needed* for 30" or bigger... I prefer it for my 23" because it keeps me from having to manually set a couple options, but that's not really a big deal.

    i disagree
it's not just the quality or sharpness, but it's the lack of noise too.
    i can tell

Uh, no, you can't get a DVI signal out of the VGA signal.

I personal have a great Eye for detail on displays. i am good at picking things out most wont notice. see we know what to look for. most people dont notice the difference. i try not to be to negative cause i always look like an ass because most people dont notice the things i do. yes it does make a difference the average user wont notice though.

I'm on the same page as steve and I think trying to convince anyone else who doesn't have the access to the same products, very difficult......

.... Noise certainly is an issue, but if you see that issue on anything under the sizes I suggested above, then either you're outputting from an older source or output to an older display. As SRD mentioned, the gap has closed quite a bit just over the last couple years and where I'd say 3 years ago, anything over 17" regular ratio or 19" widescreen could benefit from DVI.... today I can easily say 19" and 21".....SRD is afraid of being anal, but I routinely get called out myself by the most anal people I know... It's those details that drive me nuts, even if I'm the only one who could see them.

And to Loopy..... or Mythless for asking...... yes there are vga to dvi adapters on the market... hard to find, but out there. It's not going to increase your quality, but it will allow you to make that connection - some on the forum have one made by ATI - I don't know if those members still hang around, or if ATI still sells it - but you should be able to google it and find one.... especially from home theater cabling sites.
